Love the simple focused format. More of this please. Too many other channels I watch want to put up 90 minute videos and I can't really waste that much time....

MJ at Just Plane Fun has been a “parts” go to for me for three years now. He has an excellent type study series as well.

A scraper plane with a soul, nice
Thanks for the video

Love the old tools. I find myself wanting to revive tools almost as much as actual wood working. But life gets in the way of both.😢

Ah, I see you’ve mastered the ancient art of turning a simple plank into a complex series of splinters. Truly, the mark of a true craftsman! Keep it up, and you might even reach professional level.

If you do a video on scrapers I’d love to know all the difference between all the different scrapers and compare to the new scrapers on the market and even just the scraper holders that vertías and Rockler have out.

The, if memory serves, yard sale find (that I didn't know was such a find in the mid '90's) of my Stanley Sweet Heart No. 80 is a pure pleasure to use when tuned properly. Besides the inherent solidity and built-in quality of the No. 80, my Sweet Heart blade is the standard 2 13/16" wide but is a full 2 7/32" tall and is ground with two cutting edges, not just the one that is standard on today's shorter blades that only have one cutting edge. ("Worn it out by sharpening? Here, we make them. Buy a new one." [From Stanley implied.]) It, (the No. 80 Sweet Heart) when properly tuned, works great. As to the difference in blade dimensions between the old and the new blades, I presume its a reflection of corporate bean counters a' cutting corners where they can and their sales departments looking to increase sales, insurance companies assessing risks and setting rates, greedy lawyers raising the stakes of liability and government bureaucrats never ending quest to find ever more things to regulate to justify their overly and ever expanding fiefdom's.

I been meaning to get a scraper...I love my scraping cards and like the idea of holding something bigger and scraping a larger area seems like a plan

I have never seen a "bird's mouth" before, but it is functionally equivalent to a jeweler's bench pin, which is an essential part of a standard jeweler's work bench and used for just about everything.

Some of my best scrapers are made from old hand saw blades.

I have an 81 that I've been meaning to resole for a few years now. The idea of just cutting the throat is going to make it so much easier, I had originally thought that I would have to pierce it and then open it with a float, which put me off from committing to starting on it.

Nice work! Though, this is why I keep a good supply of reclaimed vintage steel and brass slotted screws on hand.

I know I commented several times about how the adjustment on the #81 was different than the #80. 😉 I have a Hock iron in mine, and it works a treat now that I have it adjusted. Mine still has the original sole, but it's definitely got a very distinct chamfer on it by now, so I may replace it at some point, perhaps with katalox. Hrm.... Anyway, glad to see how you did that--I hadn't gotten much past the "I'm going to have to do this at some point" part of the planning. One thing that almost always gets me with this plane, though... I'll be scraping with it really aggressively, and then I'll run my little finger right up against the arris on the side of the board and cut myself. I have done this _so many times_.

The sole of the old machine. Nicely done, sir!

And never knew they had a wooden sole, I learned something today and I got a quote I can't remember from whom but studs "the only day truly wasted is a day you don't learn something"!!!!

Since you made the sole, you are now a soleman

You’re a Stax Records kinda guy: A Soul Man

Random facts with a bad pun: I say “Stax Records” because it’s performed by Sam & Dave with Booker T & the MGs and other Stax regulars. Written by Isaac Hayes and David Porter. Pretty cool that all that talent were essentially neighborhood kids who liked to hang out.
