Some Russian men have left their country to avoid being called up by recruiters for Russia's first military mobilisation since World War Two.

Long queues of traffic formed at the border crossing between Russia and Georgia.

Some of those heading into the neighbouring country used bicycles to bypass lines of cars and evade a ban on crossing on foot.

Despite his past service with an elite unit of the Russian army, one young man did everything he could to avoid being sent to fight in Ukraine.

He shared his ordeal with the BBC.

Really terrifying how one man's actions can affect the entire planet

If my country was invaded I would defend it, if my country went to war with our neighbour and cousins for no reason other than the arrogance and a misguided ideal, the only person I rase arms to is the guy who made that call.
I support Ukraine 🇺🇦 and also the good people of Russia who see this for what it is. This didn't need to happen

I feel for this guy and his family, but I also pray for all the ones who couldn't not escape and are made to fight 🙏🇬🇧

I wish him and his family the best. I also wish the very best to all brave people who fled Russia because they don’t want to kill or to be killed. Hope peace comes very soon ☮️🕊️

There is no shame in fleeing. A man should only fight to defend his home and family. Opposing your dictatorial government and refusing to fight their war is what makes you a hero.

Good to see someone who understands what is happening, has a heart. Sorry he has to be separated from his family. :|

He paid 79$ to keep his life. Seems like a good deal.

I wish him all the best, that he can live with his family, a place where they can stay and live in peace, without oppression and fear, a place where he won't be forced to be a monster...

There must be many in Russia like this guy who understand what is actually going on but just cant speak up. Many good Russians will be tarnished now for years to come. Hope this guy can find peace and get back to his family soon.

It doesn't matter the situation it's always heartbreaking being separated from your family. He is a very brave man, braver than any serving in a tyrants army.

Escaping a conscription for an unjust war is neither an indication of cowardice nor a lack of patriotism. It is a courage to stand up and promoting peace and humanity!
