What is an appositive?
An appositive is a phrase that modifies/describes/gives more information about a noun. It is usually a noun phrase that comes immediately after the noun and is set off by commas.

Example:
This book belongs to Noah, my older son.
Barack Obama, former president of the U.S., was born in Hawaii.

Why are appositives useful?

You can use them in writing 1) to add more variety to your sentences and 2) to make your writing more clear by giving more information about nouns.

You should look for them when you read because they are often used to give definitions.

Hi Jenna, thank you for this useful and easy-to-understand video! I wanna ask if we should drop or keep the article for appositives. For instance, in your examples, "former President" doesn't have "the" before it, so I am a little bit confused. Is there a rule for it? I can understand "the most" but for like other situations, if no superlative is involved, should we keep the article?

Hello Ma'am 😊Can I ask a question?

I saw jeremiah, a person who likes anji.

In this sentence, "A person who likes anji"is this appositive or not?

Sorry I"m just confused😅
