The group got its name when a friend of the group saw the words "Spandau Ballet" written on a wall of a German nightclub lavatory. The name is from a term used to describe the method in which prisoners were hung during execution when the body would sway from the rope at the infamous Spandau Prison.
Spandau Prison was a former military prison located in the Spandau of Berlin. Built in 1876 and demolished in 1987. The last prisoner to die there was Rudolf Hess who was serving a life sentence after the Nuremberg Trials for war crimes during WWII.
