Dungeons tend to be lairs, homes for monsters or other types, so it only makes sense for them to be fairly small anyway. Not too many houses are sprawling 50-room labyrinths with multiple secret passages and hidden vaults.

I started doing this years ago in a dot grid notebook from Walmart. Perfect for a map and descriptions on a single page.

One thing I dont see many people mention, if you treat monsters more like factions [mostly all aligned together], things like deep caves with all sorts of 'random' monsters makes more sense when you make it seem more like an ecosystem co-living inside your dungeon.

I have a trick I have used for years before CR's were a thing. It's simple just adjust the hit points of a monster encounter rather than changing the monster itself. Example: A pathfinder 1e Troll Standard has an average of 63hp (6d8+36) with a CR of 5. By adjusting the hp you can get a Troll with a min of 42hp to a max of 84. In addition to this you could always have weaker or stronger trolls that defy the HP set by the game anyways. In this way you can still have some of the challenging features of a Monster while keeping it in line with player power levels. Great video on one room dungeons.

Thank you this is what my group needs as they are transitioning into larger groups that not everybody can make it every week

Elven Tower are amazing I love those guys, I am subbed to them mostly for the Shadowdark stuff, but I plan on using some stuff for AD&D. So much cool stuff out there. They are now doing regional areas and wow so damn good and again just slap your current game systems equivlent monster or group to their maps and prompts. Handy since I solo everything just throw something down if I have limited time :-) the AD&D books are amazing for making dungeons and other stuff as it is.

I definitely need this. I'm trying to avoid over preparing my games. I'm sure this will help.

that is every session with my players. I find if I put an orphanage in my plans, my players stick to the script.
The bandits run into the cave with the hostages. There is a sign outside the cave that says, "bandit hideout & orphanage." What do you want to do?
