Bonaparte Bails - Napoleon in Egypt - Part 4 - Extra History

Cairo has begun their revolt against the French and Napoleon is descending into darkness. He's issued extreme violence to be used, mass executions, and coined the term insurgents as he fights back against the uprising. Meanwhile, a Jihad has been proclaimed against French Troop and the bubonic plague sweeps through his forces. The French Republic of Egypt would not be an option and Napoleon did the only thing he could think of to save himself and his reputation. He left Egypt and his army behind.

To be fair, he did succeed where Alexander had failed.

Alexander famously kept going until his own men abandoned him.

Napoleon shrewdly forestalled that possibility by abandoning his men first.

I was really hoping you guys would talk about Sir Sydney Smith, the British leader of the defense at Acre. Not only is he important to that battle, he’s also important in the events come as to why Britain would renege on their deal to allow the French to surrender and return home. Though maybe he deserves an entire one off episode, because he had a really amazing life.

Just to point out how badly Napoleon had screwed up with his invasion of Egypt, the Ottoman and Russian Empires were bitter enemies, and nothing short of a miracle would have brought them together. Yet Napoleon's roughhousing and heavy-handed approach in Europe and the Middle East had made them realize France was the mutual enemy, creating an alliance were none existed before.

Wow. "Adam Ruins What We Learned in School" really glossed over how brutal and messed up the French campaign in Egypt and Syria actually was. I hope you guys are planning on making a follow up video on how Napoleon's failed campaign inadvertently lead to the Egyptomania fad and the excavation of over thirty pharaoh's tombs; not including King Tut.
