CLIP DESCRIPTION:
After the mutiny, Bligh (Anthony Hopkins) convinces his loyalists to cheer up and survive the hardship of being lost at sea.

FILM DESCRIPTION:
This fourth film dramatization of the 1789 mutiny aboard the H.M.S. Bounty is based not on the familiar Nordhoff and Hall book, but on Richard Hough's novel Captain Bligh and Mr. Christian. This time, the infamous Captain Bligh (Anthony Hopkins) is as strict a disciplinarian as ever. He is, however, no monster; faced with his crew's increasing laxity after an idyllic visit to Tahiti (the search for breadfruit takes second place to limitless sex with the island girls), Bligh is forced to resort to flogging and other such means to keep his men in line. Mr. Christian (Mel Gibson), formerly Bligh's friend, is of little use to the captain, having fallen in love with a native girl himself. Christian becomes the leader of the mutiny virtually in spite of himself; and when the mutineers try to seek refuge on Tahiti, they find that the local chief wants no part of them, which is why they settle for the nearly uninhabitable Pitcairn.

There is no man alive today who could navigate an open longboat with 20 men onboard from the middle of the Pacific Ocean to Coupang, 3400 nautical miles away. It was an unbelievable superhuman feat. He had no charts, only his superior understanding of the stars to use for a sense of direction. Bligh had to maintain a sense of optimism and hope, hold his men together through despair.
Even a team of Navy Seals couldn't do it. They are used to global GPS and high technology.
To be thrown into that vast ocean with only the rudimentary instruments available to Bligh would be impossible to any modern seaman.
Even for a chance to do it, a modern seaman would have to be specially trained to use those ancient methods of navigation. We should all take a moment to think about it and be in awe.

Other than the voyage of the James Caird by Shackleton, the open boat voyage of Captain Bligh from Polynesia to the Dutch port of Kupang 3500 nautical miles away is one of the greatest open boat voyages of all time.

The history books show that Bligh carried out a navigational miracle not to mention seamanship of the highest order.

Bligh was one of the most if not the most competent naval officer in history. I doubt an officer today could carry out this tremendous task.

This is absolutely my most favorite part of the movie. The way Bligh takes a deep breath announces what hes going to do proclaims the course of action that is real military leadership. What he says about Fiji is also awesome that cannibalism has been perfected to a science.

Wow, this is the part of the film where I really respected and felt sorry for Bligh, and his deserted crew. 👍

What an inspiring speech at the beginning.

Fortunately, Anthony Hopkins was very skilled at preparing a delicious feast from the livers of his fellow men. The roles of Hannibal Lecter and William Bligh complemented each other very well.

Rod Stewart wasn't amused with Bligh's guess at how long the voyage would take.

This is when Bligh showed that he really did have excellent leadership qualities, not to mention his astounding feat of navigation in getting his men safely to Coupang. Historical documents have shown that he was actually not the martinet portrayed in the movies, and if anything was rather moderate in his use of discipline compared to his contemporaries. His biggest mistake was in mis-reading the mood of his men, and the extent to which the malcontents on board could usurp his authority (which was a rare enough occurrence in those times). Christian was far more a disruptive, ignoble figure than he has been portrayed by Hollywood, which bent the facts to make him something of a dashing albeit tragic hero. I've always felt sorry for Bligh, whose reputation was unfairly sullied because of the political interest invested in Christian.

Bligh and his men had outstanding courage more than many of us their successful voyage in that pitiful little boat is a tribute to their heroism😊

It's a great speech, even after you realize the captain of the Titanic is also in that boat.

Say what you will about Capt. Bligh, but that was an awesome speech. Hell I'd follow him.
