The urban militia was more than just an disorganised collection of unskilled combatants the cities arranged paramilitary organisations to protect the city and their interests such as archers, gunners and cavalry.

3:50 That's interesting. I was under the impression helmets were generally the first concern when armouring yourself. Admittedly, a helmet will be quite a bit more expensive than a jacket, so it may be that many people couldn't even afford a helmet. Of those who could, I have seen it suggested the preferred order of purchase was weapon, shield, helmet, sword or body armour.

It's possible I was mislead in this impression. Do you have any opinion on the subject?

In germany the Marksman clubs or Schützenvereine began in the 12th century as organisation of... well, men wearing guns, originally soldiers and ex-soldiers, pretty soon they saw it as some kind of sport.

Interesting about the shooting contests. How many women participated in the contests overall? I'm curious if their win-rate was proportional or greater. Is there any chance these women champions would've fought with the militia when they went to war?
