i find that its best to soak the soil good before you plant the carrot seeds ! If you water it right after - they tend to float into each other

... I use old newspapers to put on top of them after water it. Use brick or heavy sticks to hold the paper from the wind.
If I plant the carrot seeds in the pot; then, I use the old window screens that I saved when we replace the windows on tip of the pots. Put some sticks on top so the squirrels don't move them.

Can I just plant them one third inch and cover them with loose soil and water? That's what I did. Planted them two days ago. What I did was take the edge of a 2 by 4, pushed it down on top of my mulched raised row, scattered the seeds in then lightly cover with soil. What's the point in using a tarp?

Can you just soak the seeds in water for 24 hours?? Would wood ash work? Papaw used wood ash so he could see where he had been sowing a tobacco bed.

I prefer pelleted seeds, easier for me to space them out. Plant fairly shallow and gently pack soil above seeds with hand. I make sure its a very fine soil they are planted in and moisten the soil 2-3 times a day till they sprout. My soil is sandy loam.
