The great Mansa Musa was the most iconic king of the Mali Empire. Considered to be one of the richest men ever, Mansa Musa is not only the right answer to a commonly asked trivia question but also one of the inspirations behind Marvel’s Black Panther. Although the other kings who reigned over Timbuktu may not be known quite as well as Mansa Musa, their lives have also inspired stories we are quite familiar with today.

I am in the same age group and heard very similar expressions, but never knew the city actually existed, let alone that the city leads such vibrant existence. I am glad I made the effort to learn more about it. I am impressed.

I'm 60 and I remember the elders use to say " I will knock you back to Timbuktu., ". I don't think they ever forget where they came from

I have been there. You better know how you are getting home. It is very sad what has happened in the last 5 years in Mali.

Interesting. I like randomly scrolling over earth on Google earth, and just happened across this. It was very captivating! In the middle of nowhere, sizeable city, and very clearly had some history.

This video has so many errors I don’t know where to start…
1. Morocco did not hold Timbuktu by the Time of the French Invasion; Timbuktu was held by Tidjaniya Caliphate during the French Invasion and the Bambara Empire prior to that
2. Whilst the Original founders are Tuareg, The largest Ethnic Group is Songhay; Tuaregs were largely assimilated or expelled from the Region or Left to the North under numerous successive kingdoms
3. NEARLY 100% of your images of Timbuktu or The Djingareyber Mosque is of an entirely different mosque….
You posted the Great Mosque of Djennè more in a video about Timbuktu than Timbuktu itself…
4. The 1990 Tuareg Rebellion wasn’t seated at Timbuktu but in Gao; The modern Separatist are seated in Kidal
Just some of the millions of glaring errors with this video

You keep showing the mosque of DeJenne, and not Timbuktu.

You had me confused from the beginning. "Sorta like an ancient New York City" that it's nothing like New York City. Then using a reference that made sense "A Mecca" only made the first comparison make less sense.
