the way i did it was as following: if x+y=12 then x= 12-y, plunging that into the 2nd equation (xy=32) we get (12-y)y=32 which when simplified equals 12y-y^2=32 subtract 32 from both sides and you get 12y-y^2-32=0 and the 2 values for y will be the value of x and y when we solve the quadratic we find y = either 4 or 8. now 4^2+8^2=80
