PPI is not the same as DPI. I mean, with new tech it is. DPI is for printers. Old Printers for old newspapers and stuff. It is not the same and it causes a lot of confusion. If you are in the 21st century then yeah it makes no difference but there are still some cases where it is not interchangeable.

that's right! they are not the same. dots per inch (DPI) is how many dots are placed per unit measured (inches) by the printer while pixels per inch tells you the quality of the digital image in the amount of pixels. Although ppi can be "interpreted" by the printer for determining the document size, DPI is its "native tongue".

You cannot differentiate between a 72 ppi and a 300 ppi image on screen. End of....

As poorly as this is articulated, I think what they’re trying to convey, and I may be wrong, is the better output resolution of your file/image the better quality of print you will get. As a colleague in the printing industry, I frequently receive files from customers containing images they've ripped off the internet or saved from various devices and applications as a low resolution image (mostly jpgs). These customers enlarge their 72 dpi images thinking this is how it will print because it looks so crisp and clean on their screen. The trick is how to articulate this to a customer who, for example, has an image that is 2” x 2” (150 pixels x 150 pixels = input resolution) saved at 72dpi (output resolution) and want a clean 10” x 10” final printed product and not see any of the pixilation that will occur. This is commonplace in printing. I’ve yet to find anyone that can articulate this concept in very layman terms to Joe Public.

Absolute garbage. A 300ppi and a 72ppi image at the same pixel resolution would be the same on the screen and same size on your disk. The only difference being they print at different sizes
