The Spy Who Came In From The Cold
From the master of spy thrillers, John le Carré's The Spy Who Came in from the Cold is a gripping story of love and betrayal at the height of the Cold War. This Penguin Modern Classics edition includes an afterword by the author and an introduction by William Boyd, author of Any Human Heart. Alex Leamas is tired. It's the 1960s, he's been out in the cold for years, spying in the shadow of the Berlin Wall for his British masters. He has seen too many good agents murdered for their troubles. Now Control wants to bring him in at last - but only after one final assignment. He must travel deep into the heart of Communist Germany and betray his country, a job that he will do with his usual cynical professionalism. But when George Smiley tries to help a young woman Leamas has befriended, Leamas's mission may prove to be the worst thing he could ever have done. In le Carré's breakthrough work of 1963, the spy story is reborn as a gritty and terrible tale of men who are caught up in politics beyond their imagining. 'A portrait of a man who has lived by lies and subterfuge for so long, he's forgotten how to tell the truth' Time 'He can communicate emotion, from sweating fear to despairing love, with terse and compassionate conviction. Above all, he can tell a tale' Sunday Times

A wonderful story ruined by regular short interruptions. Shame.

What the hell is with the drop-outs. No sound for 2-3 second, then carries on to the next time it does it.

Don’t wast a minute of your life listening to this, there’s so much missing it’s not worth disappointing yourself 🤨👎

How the hell do you upload something like this without bothering to listen to it first? Every 30 seconds the sound drops for several moments. Pretty sure it does it through the entire audiobook.

I should wish to apologize for all the critics. I think you're acting pompous. I agree with the previous comment. You're getting this brilliant work for free so appreciate it. This is an exceptional narration and the work cannot be denied regardless of the interruptions.

Can't listen to this. The breaks are annoying and leave you wondering what happened in the gaps and as every word of this story has significance the gaps make it unlistenable👎

Unfortunately pointless listening. Interruptions unnecessary.

I think the American narrator is good runner-up to Burton!

The interruptions are so frequent at at such bad times. I worried it was my phone, my internet connection…every minute or so there is a 4 second drop-out. I suspect this is because they avoid the copyright bot. But it’s just too much.

Better at 0.9x custom speed
I wonder if the pauses are from a demo version of Total Recorder, which puts in pauses every minute. It's definitely worth the $35 to get rid of them.
