Grew up watching the Long Island Rail Road and there was a female conductor who was used to seeing me railfan and she would always wave, I had stopped going for a few years and went back while I was in high school. A train went slowly through the station, and she was in the cab. We recognized each other after a second, and we both excitedly waved and smiled at each other as her train went by. Such a fun memory!

Seems like more women are beginning to work for the railroad, even in the last 5-10 years. Great to see a friendly crew!

My most memorable time as a BNSF engineer was one Friday evening, running a grain train with 4 SD 40-2s, grinding up grade at Browning, Montana towards Marias Pass. There was a complete family with parents, grand parents, young children and babies spending their evening at the depot watching trains. The turbos were screaming pulling 14, 000 tons of grain at 14 to 15 mph and I leaned out the cab side window waving to the family. Their smiles and my return smiles with waves made my time away from home so worth it.

Friendly railroad workers like her are one of the things I love most about railfanning. They really can bring joy to the hobby!
