taylor does actually reference the elizabeth taylor/richard burton love story in ...ready for it? when she sings "and he can be my jailer, burton to this taylor. every lover known in comparison is a failure"! it's an incredibly clever line, comparing her relationship with joe to theirs.

she met joe while she was still dating tom hiddleston (references to that come up in getaway car and gorgeous) and was immediately drawn to him. across the album, she expresses fear that the media might tear them apart due to her reputation (specifically in dancing with our hands tied), and so they decide to keep the relationship to themselves during that era, going to extreme lengths to avoid the media like taylor and burton had in the past.

the line expresses so much in so few words, and is yet another example of how impressive taylor swift's mind is.
