In german they are two words for "cake". Its "Kuchen" and "Torte". The difference is that a "Torte" is made out of mostly cream and the "Kuchen" is made out of mostly dough.

"Baumkuchen" (tree cake, so called because of the layers) is difficult to make without the right equipment. The traditional manufacturing uses a thick spit rotating over a fire or other heat source; the dough is dropped from above on the slowly rotating spit, so that the first layer is already baked when the second layer is applied and so forth.

14:30 min "Kalter Hund" (cold dog) was a legend on every child's birthday in the 1970s or 1980s. I cannot remember a kid's party without in my childhood. 🤗

15:10 Zwiebelkuchen goes very well with Federweißer (young wine) and is available during Federweißer season, which is only a few weeks each yea; not least because Federweißer can only be stored for a few days at most before it goes bad.

On the cake being lighter. In germany there is the tradition of Kaffee and Kuchen (coffee and cake) which is a regular light meal at around 3 pm (Not every day, but regularly often on weekends). Since its between lunch and dinner you dont want something too heavy during that, so cakes are often more on the lighter side.

Zwiebelkuchen is most popular in autumn, together with Federweißer, which ist a young wine from the recent harvest. All in all you'll hardly find it in bakeries but more likely in restaurants or in the frozen pizza section in Supermarkets.
Maybe neighboring the Flammkuchen.
And about sweetness: for people from many countries German cakes, pies and gateaus are not sweet anough. Well, maybe we just like to taste all the flavours and not just the sugar 🙃

There is a diffrence between " cake" ( Kuchen) = drier, often flat or pie-like cake similar to apple crumble and " gateau "
( Torte) which is often layered and contains more creamy or fruity and chocolaty stuff like the Schwarzwälder KirschTORTE.
That nice American-German couple didn't seem to know that the French word " gateau " is used in English to describe the heavier stuff.

Most Germans don’t eat all the traditional food like “Schweinshaxe”or “Sauerbraten” that’s often mentioned in videos about German food every day. Especially the meat based more heavy varieties of the German cuisine are mostly only eaten in winter and even then mostly only on special occasions like for example Christmas.
Instead Germans actually eat a lot of seasonal food, like for example Spargel in Spring, cabbages in winter, pumpkins in autumn and Kohlrabi and lots of Mediterranean vegetables like tomatoes, zucchini etc. in summer. Especially in summer Germans love to grill everything from vegetables to sausages and fish. Apart from that Germans eat lots of salads especially in the summer but also in winter.
That’s also why we have lots of seasonal cakes. Because Germans just eat a lot of seasonal food. 😄

With all this, you have to remember that in Germany there is an afternoon tradition called "coffee and cake". This is not unlike the British 5 o'clock tea, although for us coffee time is more likely between 3 and 4 o'clock. And that brings us to the special coffee cakes. That's what we call dry things, like pound cake, marble cake, lemon cake, or red wine cake. The problem with the dryness is solved by a sip of coffee every now and then with the bites.
🎶This is how we do it...🎶

The plums used for plum cake are actually prunes, a subspecies (Prunus domestica subsp. domestica) of plums and are called ‚Zwetschgen‘ or ‚Quetschen‘. They are more elongated and the seed comes off very easily from the pulp, it nearly falls off when you open the fruit by squeezing (germ. ‚quetschen‘) it.

I loved your reactions, that was a great and delicious video! And Max was right, the Zwiebelkuchen is almost the same as a quiche lorraine! But it can be easily made at home, you can even use camembert slices as a cover. :)

The best Black Forest gateau or Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte you definitely get in the Black Forest. And even there you should do some research to get the real thing! But it's worth it!!

I was born and still live in the zwiebelkuchen region, I really enjoy a good onion cake, but.. as I grew older, I'm having issues digesting all thouse onions, even with caraway (dunno if it's right, used a translater), which helps a lot, to me it's very hard. but it's still one of the best cakes.

The "Bienenstich" former was made with a big layer of Vanilla pudding in the middle, but it has changed to a cheap layer of vanilla cream. I don't like it anymore.

Witzig, sie hatte zu Anfang ein Kuchenpaket von Wüstefeld aus Göttingen dabei. Da kaufe ich auch öfter, der Kuchen ist gut 👍 😅

Hello dear friends, I personally LOVE Plum cake as it has a bit of acid/sour to the sweet an is a delicious thing to eat in summer. For Christmas I prefer Elisen Gingerbread from Nürnberg (Nurmberg) and not the variety in the supermarket. I order them directly from a specialist. This was invented before fridgeraters, so it had to last very long.
You TWO sweet people enjoy life.
