12:04 I think the most significant reason we don't see abiogenesis happening today is that there isn't really anywhere on Earth life can exist that hasn't already been colonised by existing lifeforms that gobble up every complex molecule with potential to become something more long before they have time to make the transition from chemistry to biology. A further implication of this would be that one of the necessary conditions for abiogenesis is the absence of any pre-existing life.

My dog was still with me during 2017, it was an amazing experience, he grew to a deep calm, looking around but not alarmed... Calm, curious, perhaps a little worried I'm not sure. I wish I could experience a total eclipse like this again some day. It was so damn cool.

The bonkers crescent shadows that everything cast were super cool. The wildlife got very quiet, everything was just strangely OFF. It was weird but it was only a few minutes. Loved that eclipse!

I remember the 2017 eclipse. I took my family down to NC to be directly in its path and my experience was exactly as you described to the smallest detail. I’d never experienced a total eclipse before and there was a split second where a chill went down my spine as all the crickets stopped chirping and all the color seemed to suddenly fade from the world. I’ve seen many pictures of eclipses and you’re right-it doesn’t look the same as seeing it in person.

This is such a fascinating topic! I'm still waiting to see when someone does some really great CGI showing the Moon whipping around Earth ten times closer than it is now, with an Earth day only six hours long during the Hadean. Imagine the monster tidal waves of the oceans!

i was able to view the eclipse from a fairly isolated natural place as well (yay oregon), and it was truly a strange and amazing experience. i have never lived through anything that felt like that, i can absolutely see why historical accounts of them have people stopping fighting and thinking of it as the gods. you wouldnt think it getting dark for a min would matter, clouds exist after all, but it was totally different.

This video is peak JMG. I had a similar experience when I saw the blood moon in the sky. It was't very different from the regular moon but just the fact that the night sky changed and proved itself not to be static was a massive eye opener.
