Best mouse trap car design goes 160 feet!

This video showcases the mouse trap racer that my daughter and I built for her school project. It blew away away the competition by going 160 feet. The next furthest car went 54 feet.

Hi Hpi Guy's Garage, I first made sure that the axle holes on the mouse trap body were slightly bigger then the axle its self.  This allowed the body to "hang" on the axle after the fishing line pulled out.  I also coated the inside of the axle holes with graphite power to reduce friction.  To keep the body from sliding side to side on the axle, I cut plastic straws to the right length which acted as spacers to fit between the body and the record wheels.  The most delicate part was drilling the hole through the middle of the axle and not splitting the axle in two!  If I build a 2.0 model, I think I might increase the diameter of the axle.  Thanks for the question!

HAH!  I made the same design in the 1970s for my daughter's project.  We had to use their materials tho, big washers on the wheels for flywheel effect and rubber bands for friction without drag. We won too.       Memories!

Dude thats awesome! One question; how did you get it so the mousetrap doesn't spin around the axle and instead it stays put and the wheels spin?

But you cheated! The weight of the moustrap is also powering it at the start. Official rules state that it should only be powered by the spring. Otherwise, it would be called a gravity powered car...
