This became our new anthem after we developed the Australian Research and Space Exploration program, A.R.S.E. for short.

Only the Civ VI folks could make an old bush song sound like it belongs on a montage about the history of space exploration.

When you wanna hit the maccas with your mates and go kick it by the billabong, but your boss calls you in for a double shift at the observatory watching the Australian Remote Space Explorer.

"Any last words before I conquer your people and put your lands under my dominion, Mr Curtin?" - "Yes, Mr Barbarossa... won't you go Waltzing Matilda with me?" *launches nuke* "I JUST BANGED THE WORLD'S FATTEST MAN!"

Can we all take a moment to respect the fact that they made WALTZING MATILDA sound badass?!

Well done Australians! You've achieved your life-long goal of appearing in Civilization!

I think this might be my favourite out of any Civ6 theme. It's somehow humble and epic at the same time, as befits a country that went from prison camp to a prosperous First World global power, without suffering from the hubris and excessive nostalgia of older powers. And the Aboriginal instruments are always in the background, as a reminder that the first Australians haven't gone anywhere.

The song that plays when an Australian enters Heaven

I love how a very legitimate interpretation of Austrailia’s UA is to shitpost and banter your neighbors so hard they get mad and declare war on you, giving all of your cities an absolutely obscene production boost even if you’re using it on non/defensive things

Once a jolly swagman camped by a billabong,
Under the shade of a coolibah tree,
He sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me,
He sang as he watched and waited 'til his billy boiled,
you'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.

Down came a jumbuck to drink at the billabong,
Up jumped the swagman and grabbed him with glee,
He sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me,
He sang as he shoved that jumbuck in his tucker bag,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.

Up rode the squatter, mounted on his thoroughbred,
Up rode the troopers, one, two, three,
With the jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me,
With the jolly jumbuck you've got in your tucker bag?
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, you scoundrel with me.

Up jumped the swagman and sprang into the billabong,
You'll never catch me alive, said he,
And his ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.

Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
His ghost may be heard as you pass by that billabong,
You'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.
Oh, you'll come a-Waltzing Matilda, with me.

When a bush ballad sounds better than your actual anthem.

This song truly evokes Australia by it's spirit, and this epic rendition is a better case than any for our anthem to be changed to this tune.

This song is jovial and good humoured, though with a slight tinge of acceptance to the melancholy. It's also a song about sticking it to the man and going out in your own little blaze of glory, and yet it's not a violent song about a last stand.

Just a dude who'd rather die than be under the control of assholes.

Fuck, this may be the most patriotic I have ever felt.

As an Australian, I never related to the song ‘Waltzing Matilda’.
Until I saw ‘On The Beach’, a film about Australia after a future nuclear war made in 1959.
The song is, of course, about a man who makes a foolish decision that dooms him, and he then decides to commit suicide; a good metaphor for most nuclear war scenarios. In the movie, it was played incessantly in this cheerful tone, as if to distinguish Melbourne from any other Hollywood set.
Then it was played in it’s true, mourning tone, over a Melbourne that was empty, because everyone was dead from the fallout. Even just this ending alone is a video worth watching.

That movie was personally heartbreaking, a true tour de force of war and peace. It was how I took ‘Waltzing Matilda’ to heart.

Legends say that if you blast this music at full volume all over Australia simultaneously, Steve Irwin will come back to life riding a flying saltwater crocodile with thousands of bin chickens and swoopy cunts following him squaking and honking along this song.

Best theme. Emotional, powerful, and about some kind of hobo thief. What's not to love?
