The job didn't pay living wage, but the marriage did.

Listen I am also desperately trying to save myself from getting a job and I don’t even get a ball gown. I know an upgrade when I see one

When getting a job means being ostracized from your social class and losing all of your friends and acquaintances because they could never associate with you now because of the scandal, I'd say it is a pretty terrible fate.

You can convince me to entertain any form of media if ball gowns are involved. I am a shamelessly simple girl

Also the reality that there were limited types of public occupation for women, most paying barely anything, all subject to absolutely horrific (even by the standards of the day) levels of physical and mental abuse by your boss, coworkers, and customers, and those weren't even the *ostracized* occupations like prostitutes or actresses (who often had to moonlight as prostitutes). Given the prospects of being single and destitute, or in a loveless marriage but at least fed and housed, it's no wonder you'd scramble for the later. It's not a love or money situation, it's "living on the streets and at the mercy of every single person you encounter" and "fed, clothed, and housed but having to deal with exactly one asshole who may be avoiding you anyway."

I forget that the type of historical fiction (romance comes hand and hand with the fiction) and read/write is different then the typical one.

Maybe it’s the time period?

If I was a historical woman I’d 100% marry a rich dude/nobility if I could. High social class, really not having to worry about starving, if I’m dropped into my great grandmother time period I’d also not have to be a farmer. Win win I’d say.

Historical time periods were also very much about class and many women couldn’t make a living wage by themselves even if they worked. So regardless of your privileges marrying rich or to someone in the nobility was something that would benefit you greatly.

It's not like job could help to avoid marriage anyway

That was unironically my genuine reaction before I looked up and saw "historical romance is like"

I mean... the jobs barely payed, her family and friends would no longer talk to or about her if they could help it...and she would have to deal with an entire lifetime of social cues, norms, and manners she never learned. Going from minor nobility to a seamstress in a shop was a wild change. Depending on the level of privilege and time period she may be even UNABLE to work. Just thoroughly unemployable.

Or epic swordfights especially if its between the two main leads. Though that's probably more fantasy romance 😅

Actually... you know, I'd probably be more interested in reading a book exactly the same as you described, but with the modern setting, 'cause it seem to be a curious thing to look at, really. I mean, it seems, to me, that a main character like that, within the modern standards and with the modern viewpoints, would be more special somehow? Like, not just a "priviledged young lady", but a spoilt rich girl who doesn't want to lift a finger to get what she wants, on top of that not even caring enough about feelings and true love. Like, it's an ultimate villain, and I find it to be capable of being more interesting then a historical romance novel ('cause we've seen quite a bunch of those).
