Here's Everything Thats WRONG With My CHEAP Jag S-Type

I couldn't let you guys down, a bunch of you tagged me in the Hoovie FB group saying I needed to buy this car, so I did. I messaged the seller immediately, went through another painful Marketplace transaction, but we ended up getting a deal made for the cheapest (and probably the ONLY) manual Jaguar S-Type in the country. This 2003 Jag S-Type is powered by the 3.0 Duratec, with a 5 speed manual behind it, and it's rear wheel drive! A pretty incredible package for how cheap the car was!

Dana is one of the coolest mechanics on YT. Just a laid back knowledgeable dude.

None of this has to do with relaiability. It´s normal wear and years of neglected maintainance, but still turn key and go, and get you where you need to go, so I would say its pretty damn reliable.

I had an 02 with suspension trouble. I saved around 400 on the lower control arm by getting the thunderbird variant. Same exact part.

Thing is, this Jag is actually a nice car, in good shape for it's age. What you are seeing is insane levels of deferred maintenance. You can start almost anywhere and improve it quickly, like the oil leaks or getting the transmission re-attached. Suspension is more money but the parts seem easy enough to find. I have a feeling that with the right work done, you will end up with an amazing car and still be at the lower end of the cost scale.

Please get this car to 100%. Don’t dump it and give up. Lets see it back to all its GLORY!

The 500 dollar control arms can be had from Rockauto for 140. Same as Lincoln LS

Still looks solid underneath. Get the deferred maintenance up to date and it will be good for another 100k

Such a pretty car. Looks like some work is ahead of you. I'm sure you're going to get it hauling hay again in no time.

You can buy most of the bushings separately and inexpensively. They are probably junk, but I feel like a sawzall, torch, hammer, chisels, anir hammer, and my harbor freight 20 ton press could make it work and it would buy her some time for not much money. I need to do the rear suspension arms on my Super V8 soon, but she is no where near as bad as that S-type.

Something about that Jag screams ‘save me’ - it’s been so neglected but I think it has a lot to give,

In the UK, the yearly government MOT test would have picked all that up years before it got to that state and it's possible to look up history against the chassis number or plate, what the previous test findings/repairs needed were. A bargain for £54.

17:57 it’s good because it’s different. These are not normal cars and they never were. Toyotas and Chevys are fine cars but there completely different from a car like this, and that’s the point. That’s why when these are new they’re extremely expensive, but they drive in such a unique way that it makes the investment worth it. Jags have been overshadowed by the Germans for too long now, and I hope this video inspires more to invest in these older jags and keep them on the road because they were extremely good cars in their day and are much more reliable than legends suggest.

For a beater with a heater that's 19 years old it's not terrible.
Just lots of deferred maintenance
The big challenge is how to source parts without the Jag sticker on

Seems like a legit project car. I do love the shape, too. They've aged really well, imo.

I owned an 04 Lincoln ls with similar suspension issues. You can buy the individual bushings on rock auto and Moog. If you’re looking for the control arms you’ll notice a big difference in price between the first and second generation. On second generation suspension parts (03 and up) ford beefed up the suspension components due to the Jag type R. From the research I’ve done I believe first and second generation suspension parts are interchangeable.

I can't wait to see how this build goes. I love old Jags, especially when it's someone else's money!

You can get a whole load of those bushings mail order after market. Some of them are "performance" ones which may affect the ride quality but they are available, at least here in the UK. You can also get pretty cheap aftermarket whole components here. It might be worth mail ordering some stuff from the UK.

As for the coolant sensor, it's not normally the sensor which is bad, it's the float. The float can be replaced but it's tricky to do, and I got a whole aftermarket coolant tank for mine for about £50 which comes with the float...the sensor is separate and clicks in underneath. It's just a reed switch and doesn't normally go wrong. When my float went out it was ok when the engine was cold but as the coolant got hotter the float would lose its buoyancy and the light would come on.
