Avoid bad tailoring habits that might be sabotaging your clothes. Before diving headfirst into DIY tailoring, it's crucial to pump the brakes a bit and make sure you’re not picking up any bad habits.

First off, not washing your clothes before tailoring them is a big no-no. It's not just about shrinkage—your clothes are pretty gross when you buy them. Trust me, I’ve worked in retail and seen some things. Always wash your clothes first to avoid any nasty surprises later on.

Next, avoid staring at your needle while sewing. It’s tempting, but it causes tiny, unnoticed adjustments that mess up your stitches. Instead, focus on the seam plate lines to keep your stitches straight.

And finally, practice is key. Don't ruin all your clothes while learning. Cut up an old bed sheet and practice on that. You'll get tons of stitches to mess up without ruining your favorite jeans.

Just a general comment, cause I don't see this said down here often enough. Thank you SD. I've pointed a TON of guys to this channel before cause it's such a great resource. People like you are the ones shifting the idea that "only women sew" or "it's not manly to sew or own a sewing machine". You've made countless videos on almost everything I could ever want to tailor, and somehow you keep coming up with more. You've done this for so long that I have guys coming back to me after I straighten them out on sewing and point them towards you, telling me how much you've (SD) has changed their life and look. And if there's any guys here who haven't got on board yet, let me point something out. If you're out with a lady and her strap pulls loose she's gonna go looking for a safety pin. But if you pull out a small sewing kit and actually fix it for her on the spot, I promise you that it ain't gonna hurt your chances. Same if you're out drinking with the guys. Buddy's shirt button comes off and you stitch it back on for him and keep him looking fly you won't have to pay for a drink all night. Real men don't worry about what other men think of them. Let the results speak for themselves. Learn to sew, watch Stylish D, and get a little confidence to go with these skills. Can't lose.

Brilliant tips! I never realized that I kept my eyes focused primarily on the needle until you mentioned it. Thanks SD 😎

Not locking Tunnel Vision on the needle is a Though one… being self taught I could have used this instruction before having to seam rip an afternoon away. 🤦‍♂️

I would love a short demo on pining ❤. I don’t know how long it will take to break my bad pinning habits but I would at least like to know how to do it right.

Sure, I watched other videos but soo many are dresses and draping with a smash cut to “look how great it turned out”… 😑. Dresses have a lot of ‘fudge’ work in them and nailing a neat tidy alterations on a thin dress shirt seems to need better fundamentals I have yet to absorb particularly in pinning. The rest I am getting good at, and my fudge work would make the Swiss jealous 😊.

These slow-release-sewing videos help with one's gentle introduction into the process.

Using super fine measurement processes I calculate that pile of washing is about 70 days old.

I'm close to correct aren't i?

I’m confused by the simplest things! How do you take others and my own measurements.
