Ep.8) My sharpest Leica lens & Smallest telephoto lens! Leica 90mm Macro Elmar Review M

Of my 2 Leica 90mm lenses the Leica 90mm f4 Macro-Elmar-M is both the most sharp and the smallest. Although not a true macro lens the Leica Elmar 90mm is still great for macro lens portrait photos being both a short telephoto lens and sharp. In this video I share digital 90mm photos using my Leica M240 and Leica CL mirrorless and some film scans shot with a Leica M3 camera. The Leica Macro Elmar 90mm lens is a collapsible design making it a very compact lens design and a perfect Leica lens for travel photography.

Did you mention that the Lens Hood can be reversed mounted over the Lens ?
The black version are made of aluminium 240g (264g incl Lens Hood and Caps), the chrome version are made of brass 320g

I use the APO / ASHP 6 bit Leica Summicron, I love that lens. Use it when can, for compression and its sharpness. I know the SL 90mm is sharper, but GOD it is HUGE ....

I do use a 90mm. I own the Leica Thambar 90mm, f2.2. Love it.

I've owned a 90mm Marco elmar since 2016 and while it's not my most used lens, I'd never part with it. This lens when paired with a 50mm summilux and a 28mm summicron makes for a perfect three lens setup.

It's also wonderful when used on an SL2/SL2s 👍

The older swing out pola filter will clamp on this lens. APO 90 2.0 is 55 mm and you need something else. For general work the two can not be separated eccept for 2.0 & 2.8.

Nice lens! I have the 90mm Tele-Elmarit (the "chubby" one) and that's one of my favourites. I think it's the sharpest Leica lens i own, actually. Really nice combination the old pre-asph look and the more modern super sharp look. Sadly no macro function with focus on a film body, but I use it on the M240 with the oufro macro ring for head shots. Works great!

Very impressive. I am beginning to think if I should purchase this macro lens although I have been using using a Tele-Elmarit 90 mm (thin version) and an APO Summicron 75 mm ASPH for portrait photography with pleasing results. Its 240 gram weight and short length should be great for traveling and shooting insects and flowers in a tropical or rain forest.

Thanks for the review. It gave me the information I needed.

I was looking for a lens that was better at close-focusing on my M6 than my Leitz 90mm f/2.
The 90mm Tele-Elmarit is better at close-focus but its high cost and its slow f/4 maximum aperture prevent me from buying this lens.

Great video Matt, I have two 90mm lenses for my M system, I have the Summicron v1 Canada, which I absolutely love the image quality of, but the size and weight is a bit of a bother, it is fairly unbalanced while shooting, front heavy on my M2. And the other I own, is the Minolta 90mm f/4 Rokkor M, which is a fantastic everyday carry lens, compact and lightweight, and top notch performance. I love both lenses for different reasons.

I've decided that I want a 28/50/90 lens family for my M. With the 50 sorted, I know I will get more use out of a 90 than a 28 so that is next. The Macro-Elmar would be my #1 choice but it will cost me over NZ$4, 000 and I can't afford that at this stage. I managed to find a Elmarit-M for just under NZ$1, 500 and have decided to go with that. I figure if at a later stage when I have more money, I can sell the Elmarit-M (it appears to be increasing in value) and get this lens.

I think that you might like the Zuiko 100mm f2.8, which is very compact, paired with an OM1/2. This combo would be about £200.

Just bought this lens on eBay. Looking forward to seeing what it can do!

Leica made a collapsible 90mm f4 Elmar way back in the 50s/60s. It looks very similar, except for the black paint, but the glass isn't the same at all. No macro function, but a very nice portrait lens.
I think it's now one of the very least expensive vintage Leica lenses.

Thanks for the review.
1. I would like to ask that it is possible to scan negative film with this macro 90 on leica digital body. is it possible to scan the negative around 1:1 ratio?

2. How short is the shortest focus range without collapsible macro mode?

Wow... I have been watching as much about the Leica M10 Monochrome as I can get my hands on. I am thinking about getting one. I love the look. You put out a very nice video. Thank you

Matt, I own the APO 90 f2, but I’m going to purchase this 90 f4. Great review! Thank you.

Did they change the design? I remember seeing photos of the Macro-Elmar having a close-up distance scale for use with the old goggles adapter, which mounts the lens upside-down...

Thanks for the review, Matt. I bought this lens right after viewing your video last year! This lens is quite compact and insanely sharp, I used it for Macro(with adapter), landscape, and headshot, plenty of joy! In the daytime or travel I would go with 90mm f4. Now I’m considering to buy an APO 75mm or 90mm F2 due to the demand of low light shooting. Which one do you think performs better at night? I also got 35mm f1.4, 75mm seems more complimentary for the lens combo?

now this a lens i would love to use. the old LTM Elmar 90/4 I own does not come close to this. Do you have any insights how the MACRO-ELMAR-M 90mm f/4 is in quality compared to the 90mm f/2.5 SUMMARIT-M or 90mm f/2.8 EMARIT-M?
