There’s no greater sound on this earth than a trains steam whistle rolling through the valley, and ricocheting off the mountain sides. None.

The way the short whistle echoed off the mountains. Beautiful

It’s always so exciting and pleasing and comforting when you realize you’re not the only one that gets goosebumps from certain things. Train whistles give me the Fizz. Especially when the mountain echo is there

It almost winds up and down like a siren. Very haunting and enhances the life in the whistle

There was a YouTube video of another whistle exactly like this, where the video was looking down from atop the mountain. Looked and sounded so haunting! I wish I could find it again.

I have a vinyl from the 60's with nothing but these sounds. It is so beautiful. If you are a vinyl nerd, look up an old train sound vinyl. It was literally ASMR before its time!

OMG!!! I've not heard that in such a long time! They still had steam locos back when I was a boy in West Virginia, on the smaller lines, and I remember hearing one, about 10PM every night as it passed an old dead station, (Cotton Hill) in the next hollar over. It was such a haunting sound, along with the "chuga-chuga" of the engine, one ghost calling to another, the perfect sound of loneliness. The whistle echoed and echoed among the hills. When the diesels came, they too saluted the old station with a haunting sound but not the same sound.

I was on a tour of Colorado's tourist railroads in June 2023, at Georgetown I was wondering whether they were running steam that day.
Cue this absolute heavenly sound echoing off the mountains. I don't think I've ever heard anything better.

Take a good listen kids. This was what you would have heard in the 1800's to the 1950's, beautiful steam whistles blowing through day the steam engine will be forgotten. And no one will remember what a steam whistle once sounded like.

I remember driving in from the west into denver and coming through the pass and hearing this. I had to stop and watch the little narrow gauge chug through the trees. Went back to George town just that specific reason.

I’m just imagining how that would sound if they did the Tweetsie Railroad Ghost Train whistle sequence.
