Hey, you make it look easy! I'd always heard that zippers were hard to install, so I've been putting it off. Turned 70 yesterday. Enough waiting; I'm gonna try it.

Thank you so much for being so detailed! I'm self taught and I've sewn simple dresses and such but I've never been bold enough to try zippers. I will definitely try your method!

I just started sewing and everyone was scaring me about adding the zipper but this makes it look attainable, hopefully I’ll do a good job. Thanks for the video¡

I've been sewing for a long time (self-taught, sadly) and I have never seen such an EASY way to do zippers. Thank you SO much for this! I particularly love your second method. I cannot believe I never thought to do that before. Comes with being an amateur, of course.

After watching several "zipper" demonstrations, I found your style so much easier to learn, and you are very pleasant to watch. Thank you!

I've been doing zippers the second method for years for upholstery work and sometimes clothes. There are of course far more methods to install zippers. My favorite for years was the hidden method and you used to buy a packaged single zipper at the fabric store. And inside that package was directions often printed on the package itself or a folded insert that showed step by step how to do that kind of zipper. I loved that method for making pillow covers as it hid the zipper. And over the years I became familiar with that look for sometimes working with outdoor gear where having a zipper protected with an overlay was helpful and I understood having made them for years that I could kinda cheat and in doing so get a lovely finished zipper better sometimes than following the directions. The longest stitch she's showing to sew two pieces together then open up the seam to center the zipper over is called a basting stitch traditionally. If you have any hesitation to give either of these techniques a try on a project go for it just jump in and do it. My only advise to a newer sewer is don't get crazy with back stitching. They suggest you don't need to but I'm one of those who always does and lucky me I married a guy who will patiently rip out my boo boo seams. And that's been going on now for over 52 years. So I'm showing my age. One of my favorite things about sewing is all the many ways you can apply zippers and for different projects. I'm a see or think something up kind of sewer with rare use of patterns. No doubt I learned with a few patterns but once I'd done two 4H fairs I never looked back and graduated to making more utilitarian style projects. Down jackets, rain coats, tents and yes sleeping bags down filled and once even a kit that had foam in the bottom for built in cushion and top with down. I look at things and know I can make that. I do the same with my imagination. I love the magical world of zippers by the yard today. So many sizes and colors and pulls. These did not exist 50 not even 25 years ago. Oh zippers by the yard did but not in all these magical colors and designs. The only annoyance is they can't make a separating jacket zipper yet in the coils. I think there is a kit that does that for the tooth YKK type zippers. I now collect longer stone and faux stone and metal earrings to repurpose as whimsical or fancy zipper pulls too. Encourage your imagination and creativity. And it won't let you down but instead gain more and more confidence and skill. So do not hesitate to try these method shared here. Well done and thank you for sharing by the way.

Thank you so much! I've been trying to teach myself how to sew and hated how my first zippers looked. This makes it looks so easy and stress free!

You are an EXCELLENT teacher. So patient and easy to follow. The school sewing teachers of many years ago, never taught what you show. I could have made beautiful things all these years if I had known the techniques you teach. Thank you. At least, now, I can make things I want too. Thank you.

You do an excellent job of zippers. I have been sewing for over 45 years and I still like to watch "how it's done", even though I've sewn many zippers in my life time. Thanks for the inspirational way of making it easy to do.

I flunked my home economics class in jr. high cuz I couldn’t get the zipper right in my skirt. This was back in the late 1960’s. All these years have gone by, and zippers have intimidated me! Watching this video made me realize how easy this can be! I am going to go sew a zipper! Thank you Dana!
