The 'Humdrum' Segment from the Countdown episode aired September 28, 1980, which Molly Meldrum presents as usual, and note, without his trademark Stetson (and not Akubra as is commonly assumed) hat (which he didn't start wearing until the early to mid 1980s). Acts that he mentions include Led Zeppelin, The Romantics, Rita Coolidge, Booker T and the MGs, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, Gary Numan, Supertramp, The Corgis, Hazel O’Connor, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Carolyne Mas, Roxy Music, Elton John, David Essex, and The Flowers.

Songs featured include The Romantics' 'That's What I Like About You', Rita Coolidge's '(You're Love Has Lifted Me) Higher and Higher', Gary Numan's 'I Die You Die', Siouxsie and the Banshees' 'Christine', Roxy Music's 'Oh Yeah', and David Essex's 'Hot Love'.

Vaxfacts: Molly discusses the death of Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonhan, who passed away three days earlier, on September 25, 1980. Molly’s prediction that Bonham’s death would spell the end of Led Zeppelin would prove to be correct- surviving Led Zeppelin band members Jimmy Page, Robert Plant and John Paul Jones would announce in a press release on December 4 that year that rather than replace Bonham, they would disband. This would not be the last time they performed together- at the Philadelphia leg of the Live Aid Concert (July 13, 1985), Page, Plant And Jones would reunite (though not listed as Led Zeppelin) with Genesis drummer and lead singer Phil Collins and drummer Tony Thompson filling in for Bonham. This performance, featuring 'Rock And Roll', 'Whole Lotta Love', and 'Stairway To Heaven', was panned by many, citing Plant's less that perfect voice, Page playing with an out of tune guitar, Collins drumwork, lack of practise beforehand, and faulty monitors. This set can be viewed in full at the following link:
Zeppelin would reunite for a one-off concert with Bonham’s son Jason taking his place on December 10, 2007, a tribute for music executive Ahmet Ertegun, which can be viewed at the following link:
Incidentally, in discussing Bonham’s death, Molly refers to the similar tragedy of AC/DC lead singer Bon Scott’s death in February that year. Bonham’s and Scott’s deaths would be identical (‘Death by Misadventure’- both men choked on their own vomit after a night of hard partying and drinking), and not far from each other (Scott in London, Bonham in Berkshire, outside London). To see Molly discuss Scott’s death two weeks after the fact, go to the following link for the ‘Humdrum’ segment from March 2, 1980:

Molly congratulates the Richmond Football Club for winning the previous day’s Australian rules football Victorian Football League Grand Final. This would be the last time that Richmond (The Tigers) would win this accolade until 2017. For a more detailed description of the 1980 VFL Grand Final (and Richmond fans’ three and a half decades of endless torment and disappointment!), along with viewing the last 15 minutes, go to the following link:
