The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx plans to be tuition-free for students, after a $1bn donation from former professor Dr Ruth Gottesman.

The donation is among the largest to date for an educational institution in the US. Half of Einstein’s most recent class of students are New Yorkers, according to the medical school – 59% are women and the majority are people of color. Einstein’s students graduate with higher amounts of debt than other medical students at New York City schools. Gottesman said she hoped that it made medical school more accessible to those who could not previously afford it

As a doctor in debt still studying, I cried even if I'm not from the college.

1 billion is an insane amount. They can teach thousands of people for free with that much

As someone who paid for his college, nothing makes me happier than to see young people not starting life shackled with debt.

With the high cost of tuition fees wonder how long the 1bn will last.
Edit
Just checked. Apparently a long time.
Dr. Gottesman’s husband died in 2022 at age 96. “He left me, unbeknownst to me, a whole portfolio of Berkshire Hathaway stock, ” she recalled. The instructions were simple: “Do whatever you think is right with it, ” she recalled.

It was overwhelming to think about, so at first she didn’t. But her children encouraged her not to wait too long.

When she focused on the bequest, she realized immediately what she wanted to do, she recalled. “I wanted to fund students at Einstein so that they would receive free tuition, ” she said. There was enough money to do that in perpetuity, she said.

I just read a full article about this. Watching the video, my spine tingled and my eyes filled up with tears. Maybe there is hope for the world after all. A breathtaking act of generosity, but one that should be/I hope will be precedent-setting. The first of many 🤞🏼🙏🏼

I hope all those students will not take that for granted and actually make a better future, not just for themselves, but the people they will be able to help.

Doctor shortages should make all schools tuition free. Not just doctors

I'm crying thinking about how well this sets these future medical professionals up for success. They will have to work so hard to get where they are going and now they don't have to go into debt!
