It's worth mentioning that in Majora's Mask, Link seems to be dozing off while riding Epona in the opening sequence, despite being the same hero from Ocarina of Time. I'm fully aware that dozing off is different from being asleep and waking up, but the reason I point it out is because I'm more inclined to believe that the Links are just sleepy guys, which dialogue in some games supports.

We 'awake' in Link and are the reason he succeeds as we follow him throughout his hero's journey. Then, after the world is safe, we 'vanish, ' as we are no longer needed. Also, in Botw, since we are not with Link during the first Calamity attack canonically, he fails.

I one read a fic that explains it by saying that the closer the hero comes to his journey, the more he sleeps because the spirit knows he'll have many sleepless nights ahead of him and it wants him to be prepared ^^

Link in botw technically only half wakes up bc he’s been in the shrine of resurrection for 100 years, and bc he’s also a whole new hero. Also, he’s probably going to need his sleep for the next 1400 hours with us barely going to stables and sleeping in his bed😭😭😭

Fun fact, you can avoid blood moons in botw and totk by going in shrines at 11;55

It has sence because it happens in their first game. In majoras mask ir tears of the kingdom the links are already héroes so they do not awake at the begining

The Hero of Twilight and Hero of the Wild are both awake when they are first recognized as the Hero.
In the former, he’s sitting by a spring talking to a friend; in the latter, he’s preparing to go into battle against a horde of monsters (referring to Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity; the beginning of the prologue is before the timeline split when he finds Terrako).
You could also say the same thing about the Link in Echoes of Wisdom (at the beginning of the game, he comes into the castle where Zelda is being held).

I think it would be fun to dissect the actual reason each hero is asleep. Most of them are just in bed but for the ones that aren't we can theorise why they're asleep at that exact point in time.
Hero of Winds is asleep at the start of Wind Waker because of the summer heat and asleep at the start of Phantom Hourglass because Tetra has worked him too hard on her ship. Hero of Tracks is asleep at the start of Spirit Tracks because he stayed up too late studying for his final exam.

There's a similar symbolism for Stand Proud in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Jonathan's eyes are closing, his adventure was done. Joseph's eyes are open, his adventure continues. Jotaro's eyes are opening, his adventure's just starting.
