If eating out is the problem, they need to start meal prepping. Getting paid on the 4th isn't the issue. Yall just don't have a weekly meal plan in place to keep you on budget.

That was the most elaborate way of saying I live paycheck to paycheck

Sometimes you just need to practice self-discipline and be strict on yourself, but often times you aren't systemized to follow your budget. As James Clear has said, *“You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems.” – James Clear*

He should be a pay period ahead instead a pay period behind playing catch-up.

This is why I budget by paycheck rather by than by month. I take what my monthly bills are (rent, electric, etc), add them together, and divide by 2. I set that amount aside in savings so that the money is there when the bills come due. I by groceries weekly, only because if I try to do it monthly or even bi-weekly, I either buy too much, or I don't buy enough. Even with a grocery list. (I also have a finnicky appetite, and trying to buy in bulk when you're either way hungry or not hungry enough is tough.) If I end up with extra money because of either overtime or an extra paycheck month, that gets factored into an extra payment or going to savings. He really over complicated it. Also, there is no rule saying you have to buy groceries, or pay your bills(except maybe rent) on the first of the month. Just make sure the money is sitting in the account for when everything needs to be bought or paid for.

I'm so glad I just live on way less than I make. So much easier not worrying about envelopes and stuff.

This is why we create our budget off of the paycheck we have rather than pre-planning. We have found that this makes it easier to fund our envelope system and have less worry about whether or not the check will come.
Learning that our budget is fluid and changing each pay period was an eye opener. I (Scott) used to try to stay on the same budget year round. With changes in income due to seasonal work and not knowing how to plan for emergencies, I would give up on the budget concept. Through FPU, I learned how to deal with this a lot better and to communicate about money as well.
Thank you Dave.

Caller: "My wife is pregnant so should I set aside another account for her extra eating requests?"....I haven't laughed that hard in a long time :p

A kid on the way, in debt and struggling to manage funds for groceries. Why would you bring a kid into this world until you're as financially stable as you can be? They will struggle even more when the baby is born. 🙄

He needs to take FPU. Somehow, he's missing the most basic premises of budgeting.

Budgeting is not hard, it just takes practice and discipline. It doesn’t matter when or how often you get paid. You just have to have the money.

What's with all the "youth pastors" having so many financial problems? It seems like a side hustle or some kind of weird calling some of these people have. Either it doesn't pay very well or people can't seem to live within the means of the low paying gig they signed up for.

Crazy how construction guys (who get paid well) have money problems.

Your mortgage/rent for October should be paid by your funds from September. You shouldn't wait for your first paycheck in October to cover your rent/ mortgage in October. If it is, you need to save up and make sure your rent/ mortgage payment is being paid by the previous month's funds.

The answer to his question is he needs to start saving some small portion of his checks until he can build in a buffer in between his checks then come back to his envelope plan. He's running out of money so he can't just take it out of the ATM.
