The Maximum Wage: How Football Changed Forever

Jimmy Hill, Tommy Trinder and Eric Morecambe all feature in the history of player payment in football. Tifo illustrator, Philippe Fenner, works his magic on union banners, Great British Establishments and many a meeting room, in order to tell Seb Stafford-Bloor’s story of the Maximum Wage: How Football Changed Forever.

How the hell did we go from this to Alexis Sanchez?

Imagine that: public support for _increasing_ the wages of players.

I was looking for a Tifo video to watch a few days ago and found out I have watched all of them released in the past 2 years. Safe to say I am more a Tifo football fan than I thought

Thanks for this. Here in America the battles between owners and player unions of the four major sports are legendary. I was very curious about the labor history of football

Its amazing to think they thought the general population would enjoy watching amature footballers just as much as pro. Like if players were to strike due to corona and they would provide stand-ins, why the hell would I watch a Liverpool or Barcelona with amature players? Its because of the skill of the pros that the game is entertaining

now it's gone totally the other way... granted that's how supply and demand works so it's not the players' fault

its crazy to think that Isaac Success earns more than Trent Alexander arnold.

Would love to see a film/series set around 1959-61 about this topic, sort of like the English Game series. Would be really interesting to see.

Now youth players are being promoted to the first team and given millions of pounds a year, times have changed

Imagine this now.
Ozil earning 200£ a week

How anyone can watch this video and not come away with a profound passion for unions and a strong feeling against the salary cap and its exploitation of players is beyond me, great video.

Imagine Sanchez earning 20 pounds a week in 1950

This is a fantastic coincidence! I've just been reading a book on Billy Wright and thinking how astonishing it is that the best First Division Footballers could only earn a maximum of 12 pounds per week. No wonder Alexis Sanchez's wages seem dirty in their eyes!

It annoying when people argue that sports athletes should be paid less as in regular wages. If they did than the players would b severely underpaid based on how much they generate and the owners would be getting all their hard earned money for basically doing nothing.

Too much cash being concentrated at the top. I can live with West Brom maybe never competing for an EPL title but right now even very big clubs are being completely locked out of progressing. We can act like it’s normal but eventually the debts being accumulated by clubs just outside the elite will begin to seriously damage the club game.

I thought you would have mentioned Sunderland in this video regarding them breaking the Maximum wage regulations after Trevor Ford's autobiography revealed that he and other players at the clubs were receiving illegal payments and gifts from the club. Quite a number of wealthy board members were suspended from football (Sunderland were know as "the Bank of Engalnd" club in the 40s and 50s due to the high transfer fees they were paying), along with Trevor Ford. Sunderland were relegated a season later, in 1958 for the 1st time in their history and you could say they have never recovered this, as they have only finished in the top 10 of the top flight 3 times after this incident.

I think they have salary and transfer limits in the MLS, maybe a topic worth discussing

Lowkey waiting for another quintuple upload day. Lockdown has been extended until the 30th where I'm from, with no football these videos have become invaluable.
