We always raise ducklings in a 'duck truck'; 3 foot wide, 10 foot long, 2 foot tall, 2x3x2 box on one end, hardware cloth sides and floor, tin roofing top, wheels, handles, and at the end opposite from the box we cut out a circle for one of the tiny plastic kiddie pools. It has an attached ramp with little slats screwed in horizontally about an inch and a half apart, and two bricks in the water as well.

Never lost a single duckling to either drowning or chilling out of hundreds. Ducklings can swim when a day old. What they need is a sure way to get out of the water, and the ability to air dry without mama to oil their fuzziness. The hardware cloth floor allows them to dry completely without harming their feet. It also ~ bonus ~ makes keeping their grow out pen easy to clean with just a good hosing down. Generally by the time they are 5 - 6 weeks old or so they are ready to upgrade/move to the permanent duck pen (before their height ever gets close to the two foot ceiling of the duck truck).
