Atreus: “ Which weapon is your favorite?”
Kratos :” They are tools for the job, to have preference is not necessary.”
Atreus : “I like the axe.”
Kratos: “…… I too like the axe”

A weapon gifted to him vs a weapon cursed to him

He seems to respect them a bit more later on when he sleeps in the tent. Hangs them properly on a post. I think he start seeing them as a reminder of how far along he has come and how much he has changed and it helps him not make the same mistakes.

Mimir: For fucksake, Brother, I know you hate the Blades of Chaos as you do the God that forged them, but you're cutting grooves into the floor just dropping them all willy nilly like that.

If you think about it this scene makes perfect sense. The blades are cursed tools which were used to carve a path bloodshed and misery. I'm sure every time he wields them, they remind him of his terrible past. While the axe on the other hand is a gift from his dead wife. In fact the axe was made to combat the mjolnir a weapon used to genocide on the behalf of the god's just like the blades.

A symbol of bondage, of terrible actions to be ashamed of.

A symbol of freedom, of a companionship to be proud of.

In the comic, the blades always return to him one way or another after he slept, so I presume he didn’t really care since they’d always be near him.

He still puts down the axe in a little bit of frustration due to Faye not being there to help him understand what's next.

This is actually kind of similar to first meeting Thor. Kratos sets the axe on the table carefully but Thor just slams Mjolnir down on the table

you later see kratos's developpement in the tent as he puts them with more respect he doesn't see them anymore as "the weapons that killed my familly ", but more like " weapons to defend my familly"

Love the way he treats the weapons.

Blades: Hateful but useful reminders.

Axe: Brings up loving but complicated feelings.

Spear: Like an extension of himself, as natural to him as breathing.

In game Atreus say "I like the axe" and Kratos respond "I too like the axe"

A little theory of mine; Each of Kratos' main weapons represent who or he was/is. His blades of Chaos symbolises as well as reminds him when he was young, blinded by rage and revenge.

Kratos does not want to be that kind of person anymore which is why he cares little about the blades cuz they remind him of who he once was not only that but the blades are cursed with him. Meaning, each time he wakes up, they are still there.

The Leviathan Axe is what he is now, cold, strong, tough and focused. As well as a tool, not just a weapon. This is want Kratos chooses to be now, calmer, in some instances better.

The drapnuir spear was actually a weapon Kratos used before hand, it was called the Arms Of Sparta in GOW: Ghost of Sparta which basically a shield and a spear. It represented his Spartan Heritage and leadership, A commander, a warrior in command.
