It's kind of scary how relatable Gir can be. He speaks to the unchecked childish id at our core. He appeals to the part of us, however small and buried, that just wants to be dumb, be cute, roll around in our own filth, and eat junk without consequences. Kind of like an immortal kid home alone on endless summer break. Gir is what a lot of us sometimes wish we could be but can't, and don't want to admit.
