Things I Should Have Bought as a Minimalist | Underconsumption

Usually, it's always the right decision to NOT buy the thing you currently want. Most of the time, it wouldn't be worth it or you have enough of it already. But in this video, I want to share some examples where I wish I had bought something sooner, spent more money on it, or made the purchasing decision in general.

#minimalism #slowliving #intentionalliving

Minimalism should never become endurance. Objects are meant to make our lives easier with their use, and we should be attuned to our needs.

Very interesting thoughts Lia. As a student I saved grocery money by not buying a lot of fruit. I wouldnt say that I regret it because I had very little money, but now good quality healthy food is some of the last things I would cut back on. Your sleep, your health and taking good care of yourself and loved ones are so essential in my opinion!

I thought you’d like my grandfather’s saying: ‘Use things until they’re worn out, and then a bit longer’!
It’s a deeply engrained philosophy in my parents and I, which is mostly a good thing, though I do struggle to decide when to stop patching clothes and give up on them. My mother tends to end up with a collection of gardening tools without handles that she soldiers on with anyway, even though a trowel with no handle is an awkward thing 😄 definitely in favour of eking out as much use from a possession as possible!
Also, taking notice of the simple pleasures in life seems more important, and sustainable, to me than spending money on attractions and manufactured experiences

I live in Latin America and wholeheartedly agree on your comment about expensive experiences.

I see people who spend a lot of money on stuff like make up, clothes, decor, etc. ALSO spend a lot of money on expensive or luxury restaurants, concert tickets, trips to Europe, etc. I would love to watch a video about that!

I dislike it when people end up bragging about their trips or say stuff like "you really need to travel to have culture, to broaden your mind, etc.", like it's the only way or if you travel you automatically become that sort of person (and that's so not true!). There are also a lot of interesting destinations that are not very popular, whereas other popular touristic destinations are really struggling right now with garbage, crowds, etc.

Such an interesting topic! I love travelling though I do it more affordably and sustainably.

Throwing money at problems: Yes! I second this so much. I'm a minimalist myself, I don't have a lot of stuff, but I do have furniture pieces, no driving license and I'm not very tall / strong. I moved 2 years ago and I will move again this year. Last time, I hired a moving company and I'm most definitely going to do it again. It's throwing money at stuff because I do have a social circle big enough and willing to help me move, but I just don't want to deal with the organisation headache ontop of everything.

Im newly divorced and embracing and transitioning into a life of essentialism. Less stuff, more making memories. Too much stuff will weigh me down when I want to hit the road so everything but the essentials are gone and going and I feel lighter already ❤

This is such a good topic! Great video. As someone who cuts my own hair and my kids hair, getting clippers with a wire was so worth it for me. Saved me so much headache and time and mental planning.

thank you for talking about this! reminds of when i lived in NYC and broke my foot..I was on crutches for almost 3 months and tried to continue commuting via the subway (no elevators btw) because i didnt want to spend the money on cars...but eventually i caved in and it made my recovery (and commute) so much better

This isn’t a physical item but I wish I had purchased Premium YouTube earlier. No more ads! It was frustrating and time-wasting sitting through ads while watching my favorite channels. It also comes with YouTube music so I was able to get rid of the other music subscription I was paying for.

Great video !
Honestly, the difficulty for me is buying clothes that i really like and not the cheapest thrifted version that i end up not feeling good wearing...i think it depends on the person but i'm really sensitive to the esthetic of clothes. For example, i ended up buying like 3 or 4 super cheap thrifted fleece jackets cause i just got sick of wearing them one after the other. I could have just put the money in the nice Patagonia one that i really wanted from the beginning 😅

I always say that I want to spend money on new experiences and new hobbies, not on things, but somehow I don’t find time for new interests. Thenks for video!

For years I tried to diy reusable cloth pads out of stuff I had at home, and nowadays I realize that between the time it takes, incorrect materials, dealing with all the leftover scraps and failed attempts that end up being discarded I'm way better buying them.

I would say other than the basics, problem solving is the #2 reason for money even over experiences.

I'm so so glad you talked about throwing money at problems. I got my first 'proper' job less than a year ago, and I'm really feeling it. I was forced by my job to take most of my holidays in August, so I had 4 weeks of holidays, and I had to move to a different city at the same time. To save money, I bought every single thing second hand, even though my previous appartement was rented fully furnished and my new one was empty, just floors and walls and ceilings. I couldn't take my time and buy furniture slowly, because my old city had a good second hand scene and my new one it's hard to find things second hand, so i had to buy everything in my old city. I saved money by not hiring movers (even though none of my friends and only one single family member was available to help me drag my refrigerator etc up the stairs in 37° weather), by not hiring help for building things (installing the kitchen, hanging curtains, new locks, installing the gaz stove, fixing leaks, redoing the tile grout and silicone in the bathroom and kitchen...). To get my deposit back from my old apartment, I redid all the wallpaper (which involved removing all the wallpaper, washing and filling and sanding the walls, new wallpaper, then three layers of paint), new locks also, deep cleaning everything... It took me my entire 4 weeks and all of it in a heatwave. I'm back at work and my mental health is in the toilet from not having had a break and I don't have enough holidays left to have a break anytime soon. In hindsight I wish I had just chosen to throw money on the problem. Not everything, but maybe spending enough that I had at least one week holiday. I'm so used to living like I did before with the minimum amount of money, and now I have a little bit more, and it would have been worth it, but I just couldn't bring myself to do it...

Ich hätte mir viel früher einen Laptop mit Windows kaufen sollen. Ein Chromebook war eine schlechte Entscheidung fürs Studium. Wurde damals aber auch schlecht beraten
