I always like to define it as "the story of us." Afterall, the etymology for _story_ and _history_ are the same.

When I was in high school, I was abysmal at history. My teacher would call on me because it was almost guaranteed that I would not know the answer. One day, he ask a question about something that had never been covered in class, and he didn't expect anyone to know the answer, least of all me. His question was "What was the name of the plane that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima?" When I told him it was the Enola Gay he picked his jaw off the floor and said "I'm not asking you any questions any more!" As it happens, I liked Mr. Carter quite a bit, even though I was abysmal at history. I liked him much better than I liked his wife, who taught at the same school. It wasn't that I hated her, it was just that we tended to strike sparks, like flint and steel. My biggest problem when it comes to history is putting events together with dates.

Absolutely disagree that an historian would not come up against a detail in a chemical equation or contents of a study of any kind. Example: Scientist A's biography tells us that he modified the 3rd ingredient in the formula for pencil erasers in 1901. Scientist B seems to be using that formula in 1927. Scientist C, 1934, decided against the compound of 1901 because a particular rubber tree was no longer available, though in 1927 it was still possible to obtain. What is the subject? The History of the Pencil Eraser, with detailed notes, Chapter 7, 'Compounds of Yesterday'.
