I’m a drummer and I tell you Karen was right in there with all the great jazz and rock drummers of her day! I loved that she played traditional grip with the left stick on the snare and the hand speed she demonstrated around the kit! Of course most know her for her outstanding alto vocals but don’t be fooled because Karen was also a marvelous drummer! I learned a lot by watching her performances! Hats off to Karen Carpenter: drummer and singer 🎤🥁extraordinaire!

Holy smokes. Sings like a bird and plays drum like a beast. So underrated. Too bad she passed way too young

I’ve known who Karen Carpenter was for decades.
I’ve heard her beautiful voice for decades.
How am I today years old and just finding out that she was a freakin’ magician on the drums?!?

Incredible.

I think maybe when Buddy Rich said she was his favorite drummer he may not have been kidding. No wonder she didn’t want to come out front. Crisp, accurate, tasteful, and that speed shows real stamina, particularly with that light a touch. She was a truly gifted singer but on this her drumming is better.

So Buddy Rich said she was his favorite drummer (when asked who his favorite drummer was) and John Lennon told her she had a beautiful voice. That’s quite a pair of endorsements.

The drum company Ludwig made custom drums for only 2 drummers in those days. The 1st was Ringo Starr and the other was Karen Carpenter.

An absolute BEAST on the drums - Superb playing & while singing, NOT easily done. Can see that playing them brought her JOY!

Karen Carpenter absolutely killed it with her drumming! To be so fast, crisp & precise all while doing lead vocals is really damn hard at any age and experience level, let alone at the tender age of EIGHTEEN (as she was in this performance)!!! A truly exceptional talent ❤

Neil Peart got an award for being voted the best rock drummer in the world in the 70's. When asked how it felt to be the best rock drummer in the world he best go ask Karen Carpenter

When she was 18, Karen Carpenter was voted at the Playboy Jazz Festival the best drummer alive. You kids have no idea what you're missing with her nuclear talent.

As a bass player, i must give respect to the bassist. Great chops, very tastefully played! No taking away from Karen or Richard, they are great in their own right.

This woman was a legendary talent in every single sense of the word. Even when she would sing, the birds sang as well. Talent like this is once in a lifetime.

I feel confident that had Karen been allowed to keep on being 'a drummer who sang' (clearly in her element sitting behind a drum kit) the world would have been a better place - and Karen would have continued to enthrall us to this day. When first I discovered her drumming (only recently) I fell in love with her music all over again, 53 year after the first time! Since being a 10 year old - I had no idea that Karen also played drums on 'Close to You'! The first 'pop' song that inspired my imagination! What a huge talent, what a huge loss to the world. So young. I could cry..

She’s the reason I started playing drums at 8. My dad took us to see them at the Greek theater when I was 8. She was amazing.

Wow she is 18 here and clearly killing it. What a talent she was. But the price she paid for being forced into the spotlight was sadly her life. Very sad.

What a talent Karen Carpenter was. She had such an angelic voice and she could really bang on those drums as well. She was so happy behind her drum kit until she had to come out to the front. A very sad end to Karen's life in the end. One of the most beautiful voices in music.

I can’t tell you how hard it is to drum that well WITHOUT singing too! Karen was such a talent. Great keyboards from her brother Richard Carpenter as well.

Wow she was a shredder!! my first wife is from Downey calif and she lived on the same block with Karen and her brother and they went to high school together and were life long friends with my ex wife!! she attended our wedding with her brother and family in 1971 when they were becoming well known!! sadly we divorced 3 years later!! but we were blessed with twin girls and she was the God mother to our little ones and it was sad when she killed herself with that dreaded disease. Very humble about their success...
