I don't think I've ever heard a nail tech say to anyone NOT to get long nails. I've watched teenagers with Grant-style chewed nails get these long stiletto nails and now I wonder how much damage was done. TYSM for sharing with us!

I always say that living with long nails is like wearing high heels everyday. It takes training, commitment and some compromises. I love wearing long pointy nails and I can't count how many times I painfully broke one during such everyday banal activities like wiping dust or working in my backyard. But it never discouraged me, on the contrary - I learned how to make super strong acrylic manicure that can survive household chores. And by the way I also discovered that doing my nails gives me great joy and artistic outlet.

I had a nail tech refuse to give me long nails once with my bitten nubs lol. I was upset but I appreciated her caring about my nail health. By far the strongest nails I’ve ever had long or short.

Omg thank you for discussing this topic. I am not a licensed nail tech but I’ve been doing my own for over 10 years and have been used to wearing long nails and still able to do everything I normally would. But some people that usually do not ever wear long nails, and always have short nails then they go get long acrylic nails done and everything they do will be a pain to them! Breakage, stabbing themselves, hitting their nails on things. If ur not used to long nails please don’t get them, start with a set let it grow out and see if u can handle the new growth length.

Having had short bitten nails and grown them out to long natural nails, and then watched a lot of nail youtubers and beauty channels, you definitely use your hands differently with different lengths! And part of preserving long nails (and your own comfort when having long nails) is learning the muscle memory of those changed habits. With short nails, you can (and often need to) poke things directly with the tip of your finger. But with long nails, you end up using the sides and bottom of your fingers much more. Until you change your instinctive poking habit, you end up breaking a lot of nails!

I wish all nail techs were as educated, skilled, and kind as you are. You always tell us the pros and the cons of nails while teaching us and it's more appreciated than you know. 💛

Love how Suzie’s first concern is always the client. I do my own nails but I’ve gone to many techs with friends and I silently cringe at some of the risky things done.

Yes yes yes. I had a tech talk me into longer nails because he thought they’d look nice. My pinkie nails broke halfway up the nail bed and the acrylics were putting sooo much pressure on them. It was so painful.

I'm new here but I love the way she speaks so confidently and in a way that's concise yet natural. She reminds me so much of the best professors I had in college.

I think we need a series of Grants journey from short bitten nails to long natural nails so everyone can see the change and growth of the nail bed as they reattach to the nail bed and grow out to support longer nails! 😁💗

as a girl who grows her nails out, i can say, ive adapted to my long nails so much that i feel SUPER uncomfortable whenever my nail breaks and leaves a mm left above the tip of my finger. seeing his natural nail be below the length of his finger tip honestly made me cringe so much because i just can't imagine my nails being that short. my skin has actually grown underneath my nail to the point where its not even possible for me to cut my nail down below my fingertip! of course, i do NOT have a problem with that though. having medium length nails is actually super useful! i just simply cant fathom having my skin tough a surface before my nail. So really, no matter what way you decide to go with your nails, it’s a commitment lol.

I’m a guitar player a cashier and a stock clerk. Having long nails when your playing guitar and working is out of the question. I can’t count how many times I’ve bumped and hit my long nails. I felt so vulnerable AF, not a good feeling to have. It’s rare that I get long nails I only get them when I’m not working, but most of the time I always cut my nails short.

Yes to growing out! I had the same issue (short nail beds after biting my nails for most of my life) and decided to start doing gel overlay. No extensions. In about 3 appointments my nails were the desired length and after about 9 months of getting gel overlay regularly, my nail beds have grown so much! Be patient, it's worth it!!

This makes so much sense! Longer nails always hurt me. It felt like my nail was being pulled up. Nail techs always want to put long nails on me and I have to ask them not to.

I love it when you do Grant's nails. The energy you two have together is so fun. It seems like you have a great friendship.

I went to a nail tech for the first time, she wanted to put long nails on me ( I never had long nails because they always break) so I said no I want short nails. She did that but made them too thick after outgrown I gave her one more chance but again short and thick. Then I started to watch your channel and learned myself to put my own nails on in the way I like it. Thank you for sharing your knowledge about everything that comes with nails ❤

I’m so thankful that you showed those pictures in black and white. Stuff like that and trauma makes me squeamish and holy cow. The black and white images made me feel fine. 😌 thank you and camera man for that! And I want to add that I love how your minds work with the visuals. The clear area on Grants nail to represent where it should stop and then the following product indicating it’s now 3x his length. Other videos I’ve noticed also have great visuals. Like images that suddenly show over your own nail to try to show to us viewers what your aiming for. Idk I can’t explain it well but I love the educational edit/visuals in your videos!!
