In Tokyo, the subway can be extremely crowded, but ALWAYS feel extremely safe. Everyone is respectful and quiet, no garbage, no graffiti - great subway system. I wish NYC could even be half as good. I rode the NYC subway system for 13 years, all hours, and was never afraid. Annoyed, yes, afraid no. The sight of the military protecting subway stations in "peacetime" is beyond shocking.
