As a new year's treat, Al Murray has recorded a chapter of 'Eclipse' by Alan Moorehead. This incredible history, republished by We Have Ways, was first published in 1945.

In chapter 14, Moorehead reconstructs, in terrifying detail, the collapse of Germany and Hitler's fragile grasp on reality slipping away.

It can be a valuable exercise to attempt to put yourselves in the mindset of the opposition.

Isn't the title Inside "Hitler's Bunker" misleading ?

I missed the opening few seconds of the reading and thought I was listening to a German alternative history where Gerd Von Runstedt takes over Germany and wins World War II. It was farther along, after the continuous references to the "broad front strategy, " that I realized it was written by one one of Montgomery's fan-boys. Moorhead didn't seem to have a clue about how the allied command structure worked in Northern Europe, his narrative timeline of the Bulge jumps back and forth repeatedly between various days in December, and his description of troop movements sounds weirdly like Napoleon shuffling corps around in Germany against the Austrians. This is particularly strange since he was actually there as a war correspondent.
