The "Leave the football before the football leaves you" quote is the best thing that Carragher has said in his punditry career, as it clearly was his experience and you can see it with Casemiro, Ronaldo etc now. Only very few players will ever perform at the elite level into their mid to late 30s.

That's why I respect Kroos' decision so much. He's leaving before it leaves him.

Now that i think about it, age is starting to catch up with my childhood heroes. Messi, Ronaldo, Neymar, Lewandowski, Modric, and even more players i could name. The level they once showed is slowly dissapearing, which makes me sad.

No lie, Messi and Ronaldo made football look easy

Unfortunately, the same psychopathy that led him to push to the top is the very same pathology that is keeping him beyond his viable window.

Age has finally caught up with him. I'm not Ronaldo biggest fan but seeing footballer you grew up with getting old is so sad man.

This is what age does to people. Ronaldo’s legacy will always be remembered but as of now people just see him as a joke now. It’s very sad to see since ronaldo was always one of my favorite players. It’s insane how a debate could change the way people view players. I think these tears though were him crying because he felt if portugal had lost all the blame would be on him and his legacy would change.

Sometimes i wish post 2022 ronaldo never existed. Sometimes I wish, out of genuine love, that this man just decided to hang up his Nike mercurials and salvage what is left of his legacy.

Fair play though. To step up during that penalty shootout, first to take one for the team, after missing one 20 minutes previously, takes balls of steel.

That assist he gave to Bruno in the group stage was poetic cause the man who loves scoring goals gave up one to win. He’s showing how important these euros are for him and winning one while playing is an amazing send off. Get this man another and better statue

As a portuguese, in Portugal, i can see a big division between people.

a part of us looks at him as an idol, and that we have to respect him no matter what happens on the field, and we cannot accept that he is no longer the Ronaldo he was 5 or 10 years ago (I disagree)

the other part (I agree), greatly admires what he did for our country, but can look at the situation in a minimally realistic way, in which what we see is Portugal wasting all the talented players in major competitions in favor of Ronaldo's ego and records, rather than the team's best.

It's overlooked that the coach, Roberto Martinez, is the one selecting Ronaldo to start as the #9. He didn't start in the World Cup and clearly, the coach feels he's the best option right now. I think there's a false narrative out there that Ronaldo is forcing himself into the team when I'm not sure that's true.

I appreciate the fact that he’s competing at almost 40 years old. He’s not great anymore but it’s still cool to see him go out there and give it his best.

you’re very well spoken i agree with all of your takes on this! it was the saddest thing to see him like that and then when his mom appeared on the screen it broke me too. i really hope portugal wins the euros it would be amazing to see

No one wants Ronaldo to go out on a whimper after he missed his penalty. Yes he hasn't been playing well since the start of the tournament but him crying was brutal. At first it looked like this was the end of him but Diogo Costa had other ideas. Ronaldo wether you like him or not will gone down as one of the greatest player ever to play the game. For that, Ronaldo earns that acknowledgement from me.

The man is old now and grown past his prime, he's still an amazing player of course, but I'm sure he realizes that he is not the same guy anymore and that this will have to end at some point soon and is having a hard time coping with it.

We are lucky to watch both him and messi play. Thought that narrative that he was crying for narcissistic reasons was idiotic. He loves his country probably as much as he loves himself.

Id love to play an entire season with Messi but id want Ronaldo in a tournament.

The main problem that I had with Ronaldo in this game was him on the setpieces. I can understand why he took the freekick (only the closest to the great area) and the penalty. But the remained of the setpieces were in no condition to be directly hit to the net, especially the one that was perfect to do a dangerous cross
