Tesla Key Fob Review

When taking delivery of a Model Y you do not get a key fob, all you get is two keycards. Mostly because you can have your phone as the key for the car. I decided to buy the Tesla Model Y / Model 3 Key Fob to try it out and see if I really need a key fob

For when I let my family borrow my car. They hate using the keycard cause they find it confusing I always wondered what could make it easier for them to understand? HERE IT IS!!

Just like they’re used to!! A key fob they can just carry around and push the break and go!

I have the same experience with my Galaxy phone. Sometimes it opens right away when I walk up other times not. Even when my phone is unlocked, it takes about 5-10 seconds for the car to wake up and connect to my phone. I think at the end of your demo, the car didn't have time to enter sleep mode before you tried again.

Once you get a Tesla you get this feeling that you feel sorry for everyone who doesn’t drive one.

Can you just walk up to the car and it automatically unlock (with the key fob in your pocket). You should notice the mirrors opening. Let me know because I’m thinking of getting this and then getting the automatic door handles so when I approach the car, it unlocks and the door handles pop out.

Hmm. Having both now, I find myself not liking the Model 3/Y key fob. That's because this one uses Bluetooth LE, which isn't as stable as say the RF wireless that the Model S/X uses. I'm sure everyone here has had the issue where you thought the passive entry worked and the door was still locked, realizing the Bluetooth didn't recognize our phones.

You're probably thinking that I'm crazy in that BLE and RF are the same RF beacon and I'd agree on principle. But in practice, the RF is superior in passive entry detection...albeit at the cost of battery life. The older Model S/X keyfobs lasts up to a year. Whereas the Model 3/Y are suppose to last more than a year.

Try holding the trunk button for 4 seconds and it should open up the charge port.

Switching from a standard car where I had two key fobs included. Now I have to spend 400 extra euros. Would expect at least one key to be included with the car.

If you keep pressing the trunk button for 3 seconds it opens the charge port 😉

Tesla have managed to fuck up somthing that has worked perfectly on other vehicles with keyless entry for like over 10 years. You have to walk away from the car to lock it? No button on the door handle to force a lock or unlock? Can you please tell us if the keyfob lets you open a door that your are NOT next to. Eg, most cars will not let you unlock via the passenger door if the fob is next to the drivers door or visa versa. Does it make sure you are RIGHT NEXT to the car to unlock? Or does it allow unlocking because you are like within 10 meters?
