This kind of thing is why I roll my eyes when someone goes missing while hiking, or other outdoor activities, and people say the missing at "very experienced" or "experts"...it makes no difference if you're alone, if you get in trouble you may only be delaying the inevitable at best.

Also, familiarity breeds contempt...

All it takes is one mistake, and it can be fatal. Deaths on Mt Baldy are not uncommon.
Seuk Doo Kim, a 78-year-old South Korean hiker, climbed Mt. Baldy, more than 700 times, also fell to his death.

All I can think is that he got overconfident and thought he would make it a challenge again.

As a youngster, my brother and I explored the woods and fields around our home most everyday. One summer, we went into the same woods we always went into, And got lost. We kept going in circles somehow, and we were stuck for 4 hours trying to find a way out. We ended up coming out on a road, 5 miles away from our house. To this day, I’ve never forgotten how scared and frantic we were the last hour. We learned a hard lesson, and marked our trails from then on.

I remember when this happened.California was under seige from a major snow storm.I asked myself, why would a man risk his life in this weather.Cabin fever perhaps

In that his remains were located months following his disappearance, the clues speak for themselves. He was found by a group hiking near the summit in August. His decision to work that area in January, alone, was less than ideal.

This was truly one of the worst days of my life! Mr. Sands was one of my top 10 people. 😢

What I found odd was after only one day of him being missing, his brother made a statement saying he had no hopes of him returning.??? After 1 day?? What did he know that he wasnt saying because u dont make a statement like that after 1 day unless u know what happened! Family holds out forever that their loved one will be found alive and well no matter how long they have been missing! Something is off here

The truth is after 200 summits on Mt. Baldy he probably knew about every square inch of the route and no doubt was confident in his approach. However confidence and experience is less helpful when the situation calls for specific gear and you have none. The oversight on his part led to a debacle on the mountain. The mountain, though it may seem like and old friend, can and will betray you because it really does not care a lick about you.

Dude what you are forgetting is we had a free storm that weekend! It was hellacious! Came up out of nowhere and there's no mystery about what happened. It was just tragic don't blame him 😡

I wonder if other climbers looted his belongings...

It seems he assumed he would be back before the show hit. Clearly he didn't have what he needed for that area specially and may have suffered an injury or at his age a sudden blood sugar issue, blood pressure issue or several other medical conditions could have contributed to a slew of possible issues. An ankle or knee sprain could have caused a serious delay that on that treacherous stretch he chose to climb that day that could have landed him straight in the middle of the snow he hoped to miss, causing death within hours from exposure. There are so many questions that toxicology and postmortem investigations might take months to conclude. Hopefully the family gets answers if they feel they need them.

But they still haven't found his backpack so they don't know what equipment he had with him.

No satellite device. Hiking alone where no one else was likely to be. That equals not prepared.

Who said he was planning to climb Mt Baldy? Maybe he was just going for a day hike in that area.

Sounds like complacency.
Unsafe complacency.

Maybe he overestimated the conditions at Mt Baldy. We had a late wet 2022 yr that brought a lot of snow in our mountain areas. CA came out of 5 yrs of drought, and snow was sporadic throughout those times. Just a thought...or maybe he wasn't planning on coming back.

Because hypothermia makes you do weird things. Plain and simple. And people fail to recognize their limits, because humans are invincible, right?
