New data for AI plastic detection! 📊

Plastic waste is one of the greatest challenges of this age. PlasticObs+ uses artificial intelligence to tackle this problem! How does it work? Water pollution is recorded with cameras and sensors on drones and airplanes. These recordings are analyzed to draw further conclusions from it. ✈️🎥

Recently, PlasticObs+ successfully completed its second test campaign in Wilhelmshaven, Germany.
During this campaign, a net was deployed in a lake, enabling a drone to scan and capture images of the floating trash samples. These images have been utilized to generate a high-quality dataset, contributing to the improvement of AI-based trash detection algorithms.

To further enhance the dataset's accuracy, ground truthing campaigns are being conducted, involving the scanning and subsequent sorting of real trash samples. This meticulous process ensures the reliability of the collected data.
At everwave, we are using this data to learn more about the trash we are collecting and it’s enabling us to address plastic pollution more effectively on our cleanup missions.

PlasticObs+ is a collaborative consortium comprising @optimare, @jadehochschule, @dfki, and @everwave. Together, we are dedicated to combatting the plastic waste problem through the application of advanced technologies and AI.
