Black belt Shaotokan here. Both athletes performed extremely well! Both technically perfect, the Japanese contender had the home advantage and also showed slightly more martial spirit.
A true privilege and treat to have seen both kata by these gentlemen! And their behaviour was very representative of Karate spirit: no fist pumping, jumping and shouting but bowing and display of respect to each other.
Just the commentators' pointless waffling were absolutely annoying

To be honest Spain killed it and in my opinion he should have been the winner. And I speak as Italian who loves Japanese culture and with a natural rivalry towards Spain (for the football 😁). Sorry to say but the Spanish dude was another level. Only thing his kata may have been easier but this doesn't change the fact that he performed with absolute perfection. But what do you expect from karate in Japan, they just had to make him win. This doesn't take anything away from Japanese awesomeness. Just my two yellow belt cents. Peace and Love and respect to all brothers from all countries. ☮️❤️
