The first tenders for Mexico's alternative to the Panama Canal have been released. This ambitious project entails a 300-kilometer railway line planned to connect the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, serving as a significant trade route. The Ministry of Economy has taken the initiative to release tenders for the development of industrial parks alongside this railway. Named the "Interoceanic Corridor," this route will traverse through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec and is envisioned as a formidable alternative to the Panama Canal. This strategic move is a flagship project of the left-nationalist President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and stands as one of the most significant endeavors of his administration. A primary objective of this project is to foster the development of Mexico's impoverished southern regions. Among the various tenders, the first six out of ten specifically target the establishment of industrial parks in the regions of Veracruz and Oaxaca. This railway line will seamlessly connect the Pacific port of Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos, located on the Gulf of Mexico. Notably, there has been a surge in business growth in Mexico, especially after the inception of the North American Free Trade Agreement in the 1990s.
