It all depends on your personal circumstances, in our case we are retired and have had out BYD ATTO3 for 13 months have never used a charger outside our own at home. We have solar panels on our house and tend to charge all day on Sundays so our costs are very low and this suits us perfectly 😊

Back in the late 90s I was working in Canada during the winter. Many of the parking lots are already wired with a 120v connection at each parking spot. These connections are for head-bolt heaters to keep engines from freezing during winter days. So, yup, the building of infrastructure for charging EVs isn't that big of a problem...

Here in Germany, fast chargers with 300 kW or more are popping up all over the place. I live in a small town near Frankfurt, and we have them now at a local gas station, a charge park near a McDonalds and the Autobahn and at the two closest supermarkets as well. I'm leasing a Lucid Air (fantastic car, BTW) and fast charging is fun! You can go from 10 to 80 % of charge in between 15 and 20 minutes depending on battery temperature, and the cost is WAY lower than an ICE car. Not to mention that the Lucid SMOKES more than 95 % of ICE cars on the road here while offering a luxurious ride. I'm not going back for sure!

I owned a Kia Niro it would charge at about 50kw on a good day but for me it was never a problem, have a coffee and a comfort break no problem, in the UK its pointless rushing as the roads are always busy and slow

Fast charging is great but bi-directional charging would be even more useful.

If you do need to do a long trip and don't think your EV can do it - rent a car/van or whatever for that trip. You will have saved more than the cost of rentals in fuel for your EV.

I like the electric Viking, great show. BUT I thought the future proofing discussion was quite light weight… ie

Battery wear and tear versus convenience??

Battery life impacts
Capital cost vs economy

Specific vehicles recommended

Future battery upgrades to encompass rapid charging

The problem isn’t the speed of charging it’s the price of the electricity! I can charge at home (UK), for as little as 7 pence per kWh but ultra fast chargers want up to 90 pence per kWh, it’s the same electricity flowing through the wires so the charger suppliers are ripping everyone off.

Fast charging and range anxiety is not real when you charge it like a cell phone at night. Full tank everyday. Long trips you have to stop and no one drives 350 miles without a break.

Just got a 2024 Ariya with 279 mile battery. I charge at home overnight with 110 outlet. If needed I can charge on Tesla chargers.
This is the first time I have leased a car. I can decide in 2 years if I want to keep it.
I am waiting for the Aptera which is solar powered.

Chargers that can do 800kw are all well and good but the problem is the size of the input to the charging station. If you have 20 chargers all being used at once then the power coming in is divided 20 ways so you will not get anywhere near the 800kw to each charger!

I bought a BYD shark 4 months ago which is a hybrid. I have yet to use a drop of gas from the all electric baby. It has been amazing so far and my buddy has a zeekr 01 and now im getting a 01 for my wife. I don't see the negative so far. I live in Mexico by the way.

I have a 2017 leaf, & now it's down to 80 miles of range. We like to take it to the coast & at about the halfway there mark there is only one fast charger. The last 3 times this single charging station with only one hook up at a time has been out of order. (3 months now), so we have to use our ICE rig. It really sucks to own an electric car unless it's a Tesla (they got lots of chargers all along the route & many more at the coast.

I bought a car with the range I need, it's an MG4. I had a great deal and I don't think I will need faster charging or more range. The short of it is the car does what I need it to do today, if that's you then find a good deal and start saving with home charging.

Im curious what average energy costs are in Australia. Here in China, we pay about $0.072 AUD cents per KW/H when we charge at night. A KW/h is basically lasting just above 4.5km for our MPV. That ends up being just $0.016 AUD per kilometre (so less than 2 cents). We've just finished a long road trip of over 3000km and paid about 3x that energy cost on the road thats still shout 5x less than gas. Saved about 550 AUD.

Even more importantly, we didnt end up taking the bullet train and even spent a day sleeping in the car with the inflatable bed. That saved far more and the ride was so enjoyable for everyone. If you have a family, they probably wont complain at all. Its awesome to see that MPVs like the X9 are releasing over there

I think people need to look past the fact that it just saves money on fuel for cost savings and you really get to enjoy so many crazy luxuries. MPVs like the X9 are just private lounges that go with you. Enjoy a massage watching dolby atmos movies on OLED in chairs more comfy than at home.

The fact that you arent burning petrol when idol is also really not discussed enough.

Re very fast chargers
Todays chargers are already more than fast enough - 20 minutes to get 200 miles range is enough
Going to ten minutes for the same is only saving you 10 minutes
So for the unanticipated long drive its only a matter of a few minutes extra
Not worth worrying about!

Some charging speeds of current models
Dacia Spring 34 kw
GWM Ora 80 kw
Leapmotor C10 84 kw
MG4 88 kw
Deepal S07 92 kw
Chery Omoda 5. 110 kw
Zeekr X 158 kw
Tesla Model Y 250 kw
STD 175kw

XPeng G6 280 kw (Sam gets 300kw though)

Not only long trips should be considered. But bi-directional charging will introduce something gas couldn't and that's to transport a large amount of readily utilized energy (electricity) in a very short amount of time. For example, your relatives power get's cut and you need to get there in a hurry to hook up to their breaker and get their lights back on.
