Would Disney Buying Fox Be Bad For The Movie Industry?

News broke today that 21st Century Fox had been holding talks to sell “most of” the company to Disney. Fox owns the rights to Star Wars: A New Hope and the live-action movie rights to Marvel’s X-Men and The Fantastic Four. If the sale goes through, it would mean that Disney would fully own the live action big screen rights to all Marvel related properties (apart from Spider-Man which is owned by Sony). Disney would also own the rights to every Star Wars film from the Original Trilogy and the Prequels. But what about the Planet of the Apes franchise? How would it be affected? And how quickly would Disney/Marvel put into motion a reboot of The Fantastic Four and a full reboot from the ground up of the X-Men universe?

Dennis Tzeng, Kristian Harloff and Mark Ellis are here to break this all down for you. They offer their thoughts on the sale and what it could mean in the short term/long term for these properties and these studios. We are living in wondrous times!

Monopoly and every monopoly is bad for the industry

Disney is getting too big. Some regulate them before its too late.

And Disney's path towards becoming a monopoly just got closer.

Disney currently have 3 houses on marvel and with this deal they upgrade to a hotel.

Dude, with all due respect, take your heads out of your asses and look beyond comic book movies for once. If Disney buys Fox, they will finally become an undefetable company that pretty much holds the entire entertainment industry as hostage. If they are starting to push theaters to give them a bigger cut with Star Wars, what do you think that will happen once they control 60 or 70% of the releases we have each year? This could pretty much break the movie industry (and maybe that's what Disney wants now that they have their eyes set on the streaming services)

It's quite horrible actually. This is too big, big monopoly. It's like a step closer to some sort film industry crash

I like Disney's content but as a company they're a bunch of arrogant bullies. I hope this doesn't happen at all.

I don't want the X-men in the MCU, inserting them into the universe now creates problems, Fantastic Four however could be weaved in with ease imo.

Yes and no. If they change their policies on R rated films, characters like Wolverine and Deadpool will be treated with respect. I suggest they open a subsidiary under the Disney umbrella that allows more mature films like Logan and DP. This would also decrease the amount of Marvel based films released since they release 3 a year.

However, this can be a problem for other types of movies. It means that there's one less studio to pitch to, and that's scary. It's one less voice that can potentially say yes, and that one yes can change lives forever. Stallone pitched Rocky to everyone forever until he finally got one yes. Disney buying Fox can potentially eliminate that yes for someone.

Does this mean I will be able to see a good F4 movie in my lifetime?

this would be bad.... Create a monopoly. Who would compete against Disney. Disney would end up owning over 1/3 of the market. Unfair for smaller studios.

To all you people wondering if Deadpool will still be allowed to be R, keep this in mind; Disney owned Miramax at the time they made Pulp Fiction.

The deal is apparently dead for now, but I'd be against it purely for moral/economic reasons. Monopolies are dangerous and should be avoided. No ONE company should be able to dominate an industry so heavily -- it just leads to more price gouging and corruption. I'm a frequent defender of Disney, but this deal would not be good for consumers or the film/TV industry.

I want another superhero movie like Logan and not like Spider-Man homecoming (even though I like Spider-Man homecoming) 🤷🏽‍♂️

I HATE this. Why are so many people happy about Disney being a monopoly??? At least fox has taken some chances when it comes to making films not geared towards 13yr olds. If Disney owned fox before, we would NEVER have gotten deadpool, logan, the new mutants coming out soon. I'm a fan, and I'm not happy about this at all...RIP good CBM for adults. And no way in hell am I'm paying Disney more money in a streaming service to watch these shows. I'll figure out something else.

RIP Deadpool
Disney will never release an r-rated deadpool 2
