West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has offered to step down after publicly apologising for the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata. The August 9 rape and murder of the 31-year-old medical professional in Kolkata's RG Kar hospital has ignited protests across the country, with activists and the public decrying the persistent threat of sexual violence faced by women in India, despite the enactment of stricter laws. Doctors have called for Banerjee's resignation, accusing her of mishandling the aftermath. Even after the Supreme Court ordered junior doctors to return to work, they defied the ruling and continued their strike. Banerjee attempted to meet the protesting doctors, but they refused after the government declined to livestream the discussions, as legal proceedings were still ongoing. While demonstrations in other parts of India have relatively subsided, doctors in West Bengal have been persistent with their rallies and campaigns. The West Bengal government says at least 23 people have died because they couldn't access medical facilities due to the strike.
