SEA GAMES

More about the game:

IT was perhaps the Philippine men’s basketball team that had the least stars sent to battle in the Southeast Asian Games.

But for this rag-tag team, 'Puso’ was already a norm as early as 1993.

Bereft of a legitimate star player, the Filipinos leaned on their heart and grit to keep the basketball gold in the Philippines' hands during the 17th edition of the biennial meet in Singapore.

These bunch of ‘replacements’ were put together under the most trying circumstances, no thanks to the rift between then Basketball Association of the Philippines (BAP) and the Philippine Basketball League (PBL), whose star players were supposed to beef up the Philippine squad to the SEA Games.

With former national player Rogelio ‘Tembong’ Melencio tasked to handle the squad, the late Tondo-born mentor tapped personalities who mirrored his playing style – a tough, rough big man who didn't back down in any fight.
And so it didn’t come as a surprise that Melencio handpicked the likes of Poch Juinio, Peter Naron, Rodney Santos, Siot Tanquingcen, Michael Orquillas, Cris Bade, Long David, Dale Singson, Gilbert Castillo, Eric Gascon, and ageing ex-pros Harmon Codinera and Onchie Dela Cruz to comprise the national team, which also had Horacio Lim and the late Angel ‘Boy’ Ascue as assistant coaches.

But there was no repeat of a Thai setback when the two teams arranged a rematch in the gold-medal game.

Before a roaring crowd of mostly 3,000 overseas Filipino workers at the Singapore National Stadium, the Philippine team leaned on the 27-point explosion of Naron and two crucial free throws by Orquillas in the final seven seconds to pull off a gutsy 71-66 win and retain the basketball gold against all odds.

It was just a single gold that added to the total of 57 won by the country in the Singapore Games 26 years ago, but definitely the most rewarding for this overachieving ‘rag-tag’ basketball team.

Two years after the special feat, Melencio passed away. Yet there was no denying the legacy he left and that of his heroic bunch of players will forever go down as one of the greatest Philippine moments in SEA Games history.
Naturally, there was apprehension heading to the Games especially with the country having just regained the basketball crown two years back in Manila after surprisingly surrendering the gold to Malaysia in the 1989 edition of the competition.

The team did look vulnerable from the start.

It lost to perennial rival Thailand during the preliminaries and then barely beat Indonesia in overtime, 77-75, after clawing its way back from a 13-point deficit.

Thank you for Great upload, I was there during the that match, but the best is Phils vs Indonesia, 1st half lamang ang Indonesia only then sa 2nd half naman ang lumamang at nanalo ang Phils, coach Melencio made a half time strategy that make the difference, cheers!
I just hope you also have those videos 1993 SEAGames : Phils vs Indonesia

Walang Marlou Aquino, walang Dennis Espino, walang Kenneth Duremdes, walang EJ Fiehl, walang Noli Locsin, walang Vince Hizon, walang Rey Evangelista... Lahat ng sikat sa PBL at college wala. Walang STARS... Walang PA-POGI... Laban lang ng laban... Patay kung patay... Sayang at parang nababalewala lang ang nagawa ng team na ito... SALAMAT at naalala sila ng uploader.

Back in the days all of the representative of all SEA countries in basketball have the chance to win the gold in seagames, but now what they're just aiming for is the silver because Philippines is expected to win the gold easily.🤣

I very much remember this team.Di sapat ang isang gold sa panalong to. Natalo pa to sa thailand nung prelims. Walang star player na kasama. Kulang na kulang sa talent.Magulo pa ang BAP nung time na yon. Puso ang nagdala. Saludo ko dito sa mga to.

It looked like the Philippines was very weak back then, even though Thailand was just the only opponent they couldn't get a big point advantage.

Rag Tag Team lang ito pinakamhinang Team na pinadala.

Maraming mga tao na umaasang hindi ito mananalo ng Gold.

Pero Mali sila!
