All this time they've only been killing drones who (according to the narrative) were bred to be mindless canon fodder, while every human that died had an individual personality and whole life and family. Only the brain bugs think (according to the narrative), so this is the first time they ever made a bug afraid, like they've been since the beginning, and the first time they've ever made the bugs feel consequences.
